A "National Match" replica Colt M1860 Army Revolver!!!!
« on: April 01, 2015, 02:54:47 PM »
Could a replica M1860 Colt Revolver start winning all the Target Matches for accuracy in N-SSA Revolver Matches?

{Skirmishers cannot use Remmies with modern rear sights nor any Ruger Old Army Revolvers because they are not "authentic" to the Civil War era.}

Here is what I am talking about:

Well, back in the 1850's and early 1860's Colt actually produced some Dragoon and M1860 Army Revolvers WITH THREE LEAF FOLDING REAR SIGHTS! In both the Dragoon and M1860 series, the revolvers were the "4 Screw Models" designed to take an attachable shoulder stock.

But wait a second, everyone "knows" that a solid frame Remmie or Rogers & Spencer [or Ruger Old Army] Revolvers are "solid frame" revolvers and that is what everyone shoots in the target matches today.

Well, a few years ago in Europe there was a designer that worked for an European car company and he had access to some pretty sophisticated CAD computers. His hobby was black powder shooting, so just out of a lark, he fed in the specifications to one of the replica Colt Dragoon Revolvers and also his replica Remmie New Model 1858 revolver.

HE WAS STUNNED WHEN THE COMPUTER RESULTS SHOWED HIM THAT THE REPLICA COLT'S FRAME WAS MORE "RIGID" THAN THE SOLID FRAME REMMIE DESIGN!!!

So, seems to me that any competitive shooter that wanted to win some 1st Place Medals could take a replica Colt Dragoon or replica M1860 with the 3 Leaf Rear Sight and WIN some 1st Place medals.

One of the problems that Remmie and Rogers & Spencer shooters have is that the sight groove in the top of the frame is non-adjustable In other words IF they sight in their pistol for 25 yards they have to "hold over" the 50 yard targets. Not a very good idea for winning matches.

However, with an "Accurizied" replica Colt M1860 with the 3 Leaf Rear Sight, one leaf of the rear sight set up for 25 yards and another leaf for 50 yards-giving the shooter of that replica Colt a tremendous advantage in matches!

So, does anyone out there want to test this theory?

Hopefully Pietta or Uberti could be talked into making a run of their replica Dragoons and M1860 Colts with the 3 Leaf Rear Sight. Some of the replica Dragoons made by Armi San Marcos came with the 3 Leaf Rear Sight.

Or a machinist would have to make a replica of the original Colt 3 Leaf Rear Sight and the revolver would have to be "Accurized" by someone that knew how to make the replica Colt M1860 shoot and the sights installed on a revolver.

So, I am asking IF anyone out there is interested in taking the Challenge?

Here is a linkto a picture of an original Colt Dragoon with the Colt 3 Leaf Rear Sight. Some of the original Colt M 1860 Army Revolvers also came with an identical 3 Leaf Rear Sight!

Some of the replica 3rd Model Dragoons turned out by Armi San Marco came with those rear sights, so they are out there.
