Made a knife
« on: April 29, 2015, 06:01:39 PM »
Been looking for a Green River knife for a while.  I couldn't find an antique one I wanted so I ordered a blade and made one myself.
The handle is Lacewood held in place with 1/4 inch brass rivets.
Made a fringed sheath too.   Nothing on the sheath is sewn,  everything is laced together.

I build cabinets in my "other life"  away from leather and black powder.   There is a lumber company in Denver that has a lot exotic woods that I buy things from occasionally.  I found a piece of Lacewood there in the bargain bin.   It's big enough for several knife handles and maybe 8 or 10 sets of grips.   I'm going to try some grips next.
I don't think Lace wood is popular with knife or stock makers since it is a little on the soft side.   It's easy to work with though and looks pretty good.   It looks better in larger pieces.

Mike, you did a great job as usual! Is the fringe along the blade side of the sheath the lacing thongs?

Yep,  just doubled pulled through the holes to make a loop and then pulled tight onto itself.   An easy way to make a fringed edge.   The top fringe is cut part way on a strip of leather,  then folded over the top edge of the sheath.   That piece is whip stitched around the top.   That makes the top edge stiff enough to stay open so the knife is easy to put in the sheath.
