Back in the day, I started shooting with the old standard, lube-over-ball, and have used a variety of different lubes, from T/C Maxi Lube, to Bore Butter, to Crisco, all with success but frustration at the mess a cylinder-full blows all over the gun. I tried using Wonder Wads (or equivalent) about ten years ago and am a firm convert these days, even though I carry Crisco in my range box as a back-up.

I stamp most of my wads out of old felt hats from the goodwill store, or the Salvation army.

I lube them sparingly on the top side, the side away from the powder. I have pretty good sucess this way.

Hi Captain, I have a few thousand of the Sagebrush lubed wads. I noticed that the wads are now beginning to turn rancid by the smell. I don't know what they lubed them with, but it still does the job. Maybe they used slut olive oil instead of extra virgin?

What I like about using lubed wads is that they do the job for either ball or conicals. No mess and no greased pig handgun.

LOL. Like trying to hold onto a greased eel, I always say.  Plus, there is evidence that felt wads were used "back in the day" so they are HC to some degree. Probably a lot more than Crisco..lol!

i buy felt from the fabric store, punch out my own wads with hole punches and dip them in warm lube made from about 50-50 beeswax and vaseline, drop them on paper towels to cool. think ill try some pills, too.     mark

A black powder lube made by a chemist friend, that has passed away.

I keep looking for the hats, but they are way more costly than just wool felt.

Yes, it's probably much easier to just buy a square yard of Durafelt. Probably the last you'll ever have to buy.
