Hard times Colt
« on: June 24, 2016, 11:31:48 AM »
The mailman dropped off a Colt this AM; the ol' gal has had a hard life. Missing a few action and frame screws, probably needs some parts too. It was made in '78 but haven't been able to see the maker's mark yet. I'm off to the basement to see about dismantling the gun and further assess the situation.

Hi mazo, photos, photos, photos please. IMO some misused replicas deserve being turned into razor blades. The cost to repair can exceed the cost for a new revolver, especially a brass framed revolver.

Getting a current production BP revolver into shape is sometimes enough of an adventure.

BTW, I saw your photos on another message board. My guess is that your replica Colt belonged to Johnnie who used it for a doorstop.  )lI )lI

I've been unable to ever post pics here.. I think the size limit is based on cameras made back when these guns were really used ;) not with modern high mp counts ;)

Yes, I will be posting some photos. I use PhotoBucket, but probably any storage site will automatically re-size your photos.

The brass is a dark patina

After a Kroil bath and a bit of gentle persuasion, the barrel wedge and barrel came off

The cylinder also needed work; it would only slide off the arbor to about 1/4" from the end. I had to carefully file the arbor down. The oily rust actually helped the process as I could see the area needing more filing.

That's acute little 36 for sure...glad it went to you for rehab..keep us posted on how she shoots when you're done. The patina on the brass is outstandoing, hop you can keep it intact.

Cleaned on the cylinder some more. I'm thinking that the "crack" might not actually be one. I can't find anything on the inside of the chamber using a small wire and scratching along the side. Will try using a needle and maybe a magnet and iron filings.

And here she sleeps after all that stress of cleaning. I still have a bit more to do.  Will order the screws probably tomorrow.

Thanks, mazo. you have found the correct home for this thread.

We are still awaiting your prognostication. Looks like you have done a fine job on it so far.
