Looking at a High Standard G and G
« on: July 14, 2016, 08:09:52 AM »
I'm looking at a nice looking G&G, won't be able to tell if I bought it until about a month from now.

Hope you have better luck than my buddy. He bought a HS L&R and said it was the biggest piece of crap he owned.

Mazo,

Judging from your pictures, that HS G&G looks to be in nice condition. However, I don't care for the light-colored wood. I have no experience with those pistols, but I do have a Pietta G&G .36 (date code [CN] 2015) with Pietta's newer gripframe profile which is similar to the HS G&G, as compared to my Pietta 1851 Navy .36 2nd Model (squareback) (date code [CM] 2014) which has the Pietta "tail" grip profile. The newer profile has a thicker wrist than the older "tail" profile.

The HS seems to have a blued load-lever/rammer whereas the Pietta has the case-colored parts.

Cabela's sells the Pietta G&G for ~$220 all day long (and I have never seen the newer model on sale) at times with free or $5 shipping. It has a blued (vs. case-colored)  trigger and a plain/unengraved cylinder. Mine works very well out of the box. I have no idea what your HS G&G is selling for.

Just FYI.

For your perusal, a comparison photo:

i haven't called in a bid yet; I wait to see what the guns are going for and if in my range, I will call in a max bid the afternoon before the auction. There are still 25 days to go yet, so I am just biding my time.

Can you give us what the last bid and reserve is on that auction? Just curious as to what the price range is but I am not the least bit interested in that pistol since I have enough (one) G&G pistols in my possession so I won't be bidding. Thanks in advance if you choose to do so.

My impetus is a Pietta Dance and Brothers .36 (I know, not easy) or a Pietta 1851 Navy steel w/round TG to complete my swapouts between 3 pistols in order to create a plethora of fantasy and somewhat authentic replica pistols. The accumulated money saved won't be in full until around Christmas.

Jim, my buddy won his for around 300, it was in a cased set with matching cutlass serialed the same. At that time average price was 5 and above (probably 4 years ago now...maybe 2012?) Gun sure looked good but the lockup and timing was off, internals were very rough and it felt like it was full of sand, hence his bad review.

If.....I am lucky enough to win the gun, I probably will strip and stain the grips with my home made walnut stain. Or make a new set out of curly maple or walnut. There is no reserve as this is an actual auction, but the bid is under $50.00 at this time. Bidding usually doesn't heat up until a couple of days before the live auction unless the guns are high-end or collectible, then they will be bid up daily. I'm also looking/watching at 2-3 other black powder guns.

I guess I am not too optimistic about this auction....my brother was telling me about a TV series "Hell on Wheels" and the lead character is carrying a G&G. I looked it up and he is actually carrying a brass framed '60 (but they call it a G&G), however this is making the G&G more popular.

There is a Pietta tail G&G .36 pre-2015 on GB, no bids yet.
