36 cal revolver ball?
« on: July 20, 2016, 07:03:17 PM »
I shoot 44 cal revolvers but looking at a 36.

What are the ball options?

For instance, 44 has .451 .454 .457 etc

Thanks

My Uberti London navy uses a .380 ball.

Generally speaking,  Pietta= .375 round ball  and Uberti = .380 round ball.

I use .380's in my Pietta's but .375's will work ok. Uberti needs .380's

I wonder why fewer options.

Last night I was looking, and other than one specialty place I saw, if you want other than .375, you have to roll your own.

The early .44's took .451's, then the chambers were enlarged by most makers and .454 became the standard. Then the ROA came out and required .457 and Uberti made their chambers bigger or vice versa. Some people do use .451's in Pietta but I have had them move under recoil so I went with .454 and now have a Dragoon that needs .457 so may just stay with them for everything.

Hawg,

Do you find that the .380 round ball gives better accuracy in your Pietta models or do you like that size for some other reason?  I have been thinking of trying .380's, though I get a good shaved ring when I seat my current size of .375.

My 5-shot police model takes .375 RB's, all the rest take .380 RB's.  The teensy .31 Remmy takes .330 RB's a bit large but they work.
All 36 cal except the .31

Neat, thanks.

I had no problems with 451 in brass guns I started with, but assume they were too light of recoil to do much.

I'm casting now and went middle of the road so I make .454.

I tried some 457, and my chambers in all but 2 guns are hard to seat them.  One has chamfered mouths that must swage it down, the other is my walker, it eats them fine, stiff, but fine.  454 work ok, 451 no go.

Any accuracy difference if any is minimal. I just like it because they shave a bigger ring and give a teeny bit more bearing surface for the rifling. Plus if I ever get a Uberti I'll already have the mold for it.  (7+"

The EPP .36 cal bullets from whyteleatherworks.com work great, great, great in my Uberti 1851 Navy. They fit under the loading cut out and you do not need to use a loading stand. They are a little bit tricky so I use tweezers to set them on just right but you can do it by hand if necessary.

BTW I have also shot a couple hundred Hornady .375 balls in my Uberti 1851 and have not seen any creep from recoil. My Uberti is a 2015 production with the round brass trigger guard. I can't say .375 would work in all new Uberti's but in mine there have not been any problems.
