1873 Pietta Cap & Ball
« on: December 06, 2016, 03:07:49 AM »
So I picked this up at my local gun shop.
Question is, Where did they hide the date stamp?

UPDATE:
I finally heard back from Pietta, there was no date stamp.
My revolver was built in 2001, and of course it's an oddity.
The new cylinders will not fit, so if I decide I want an extra gotta build it myself.

Yeah, that's where all the Italian markings are on my 73 except for the cat number.

At first glance I thought it was a cartridge gun...then I saw the nipples. So you have to load the cylinder off the frame. I knew they made that gun but thought only in the matte black finish. Very nice!

They made a blued version too.

I pulled the ejector off, nothing on the underside. I pulled the grips, nothing there either.
Guess I'll have to strip it down.
I was thinking this could be converted to cartridge, Looks like a big job.
There is a huge offset oval hole where the hammer goes through the frame.
I think it would require a threaded bushing with a centered hole & different firing pin.
Do-able, but then I'd have to make a cylinder because the black powder cylinder is longer.
I don't think it would be worth the trouble. Can't wait to get out & see how it shoots.

It can be done. Some people claim to have done it just by reshaping the firing pin, and swapping cylinders of course. The .45 Colt cylinder should fit with no problems. I know of one guy that swapped a Hammer from a cartridge gun and egg shaped the hole but it was blowing primers out so he swapped it back. The best way would be to weld the hole up and install a bushing and a cartridge hammer.

They are made in a Bisley model also.

I know it's a bit of a bastard but I really like the way it shoots.  So much so that  I'm about to quit looking for a Cattleman in 44-40 and order one of these Bisley models in 44-40 with a 7 1/2 inch barrel.   Taylors has them as well as Dixie.   Buffalo Arms is sold out.

well mike, I now have three of these, so I guess i like barstiches too!
oddly there are differences in frames depending upon the date.

I am trying to get one in 7 1/2 ....
