Some knives I have made
« on: December 06, 2013, 11:18:30 AM »
Here are some knives I have made over several years. The top one is made from a file, the bottom one is made from a lawn mower blade.

Here are a couple of tiny ones; they are almost as much work as a full size knife!

I love that small one.  Would make a wonderful patch knife.  How would a person go about making something like that?  Are there any web sites that would give information on knife making for dummies?  Just remember, I gots 10 thumbs when it comes to making stuff like that. L@.  Anyway, great job.   )k*

Yeah, I guess the older blades are pretty good steel. I got almost done making this blade and I thought "what if it won't harden"?  :'(
Well it did and holds a nice edge if I have to say so myself. And I don't consider myself a knife maker; anyone should be able to make one if you have a grinder and drill press.

How did you harden it after you shaped & sharpened?

I did the final sharpening after the hardening....I heated the blade red hot and plunged it into a can of drain oil. After cooling I heated the blade to a straw color IIRC, and let it cool naturally. ...been over 20 years!

Might give that a whirl, Emery. Got an old mower blade in the garage, I think..

Old circle saw blades make fine knives and if you keep it cool while you're shaping it it won't need hardening.

Hawg, you are right (as per usual!) about circular saw blades.  They are easier than a file; Those things take a loooong time a grinding! When I made the file blade, I started out grinding, but the thickness of the file was taking forever to grind. I heated it red hot and plunged it in a bucket of asbestos powder (GASP!!!) that was setting around at work. That's how long ago I made that knife! Now, I use a trash can with wood ashes in it to cool steel down slowly.  The lawn mower blade wasn't quite as bad as the file but thicker than a saw blade for sure.  Some other stuff to consider is heavy grass shears or shears of any kind and old carbon steel butcher knives that can be ground to a new shape.

Yeah, old butcher knives are good. Old meat cleavers make good heavy knives if you can find one reasonably priced.  I've made a few knives from scratch but none as nice as yours. Here's an Old Hickory I reshaped.
