62 police question
« on: March 14, 2017, 01:05:37 PM »
how much smaller is the 62 compared to the 51 navy ?
could someone post a picture of the two together?
I have the  51 navy and am thinking of the 62 police or the 49 pocket

anyone have side by side pics of all 3 ?

don't know if i want to go with a .31 caliber but id like one of the smallest pistols, short and light
and have read the 62 is the same size as the 49 but in .36
then I'm gonna go for the BIG BOY walker kit

thank you very much
John

Here is my 1851 Navy (Pietta)  and my 1862 Police.(Uberti)
I don't have a 49 to compare.
Note when you search for reproductions the 62 Police  Uberti 5 shot .36  is closer to
originals. A Pietta I believe is a little larger and is a 6 shot .36 .

Check out ads for both, you will get more detail on specs.
Sorry photo didn't posted correctly.
But do ad searches that will help you...good luck.

Hi O/F - This is one of Bishop Creek’s excellent photos of some of his guns.  You will note the ’62 at the bottom compared to the two 1851’s immediately above it.

The Pietta .36 Remington Police is full frame - same as their .44’s and the heaviest Rem I own.  If you are looking for small, forget that one.  It's a cool gun, but neither small nor light.  From you comments I infer that a Colt 1862 would suit you to a Tee.  They are just plain beautiful, and smallish.

You're welcome G Dog! Feel free to repost my pics anytime.

Hi John, know that the smaller the Colt type revolver, the more a capsucker. A potential issue for the Uberti 1862 is that other than a .22, there is no conversion cylinder available. The Pietta 1862 is more like an 1861, but more useful since there are conversion cylinders for that model. The Pietta is also much lower cost and 1851 Pietta cylinders can be used with it.

My Uberti 1862 is mostly a display piece.

Difference between Pietta and Uberti 1862, Pietta on top:

thank you very much,

I have the REM 1858
the 1851 navy
and the 1860 army
(all piettas)

and i know going large is to go with the walker,

the piettas in she 62 isn't the real frame size, where as the ubertie would be,

so its really come down to the Ubertie 1849 in .31 or the  62 police in .36
im not worried about the cap sucking as i used to play with a lathe and mill and have read about the pin fix,

not looking to go with brass cases, I've other pistols for that

Oldfart,

I don't have a pic of all three, but, you probably already know this, the 49 and 62 Police are both built from the same frame, with the police frame and cylinder being rebated for the larger ball.  Overall, they are about the same size (save the differences in barrel length/design).

I have an Uberti Pocket Model with 4 in. barrel and want to add a Police version also.  You would enjoy either one, the small ones are fun to handle, carry around, shoot, etc.  whatever you decide, please post some pics when you get it.

Here is a photo with a 62, 49 and 51 next to each other. IMHO the 62 actually balances better than the 49. The 49 and 62 are ubertis the 51 is a pieta. The 1862 pieta is really an 1861 and is not even close to the original in size.

The 62 is a 49 frame with a rebated cylinder. Except for Pietta they use the 51 navy frame.

The Pietta “1862” should be more correctly labeled as a chopped Colt 1861 with a semi-fluted cylinder; that’s what it is.  The shorter barrel is perfectly historic (although not manufactured as such) and the half flutes are not.  Hella handsome pistol notwithstanding whatever they may have decided to call it, flutes and all.  I like em.

Hi, the 1862 is built on the same frame as the 1849, the 1862 on top, see:

Some little ones, 1849s and 1863s:

The top 1863 has .32 S&W conversion cylinder.

The little ones are fun to hold, the larger framed revolvers are the ones to shoot.

Richard
