Anyone know Reloading info.31 round ball mould ?
« on: July 08, 2017, 08:11:34 AM »
I'm in the market for a Lee .319  90410 2 cavity round ball mold, TYKO seems
to have the best price.
Never heard of them before. Good  Co ?
Any other makers of .31 moulds ?

Hi Hewy, IMO that's too small a ball size for the .31 Uberti's. I use 00-buck, but load off the gun because it takes too much force for the small loading lever of the 1849, see:

http://leeprecision.com/00-buckshot-mold.html

Since there is so little powder capacity, to get good velocities, you want to use the largest ball you can jam in the cylinder chambers. 0-Buck (0.32") is too small, see:

I have read all the comments you refer to. Here is my wants (if you will)
I don't want to load off the gun as I'm not into precision target shooting nor  powerful BP loads.
This is a little .31 after all. I also want to do my own casting, therefore high volume is not a requirement.
My thoughts regarding these Colts is shoot as designed back in 1849.
Thanks for all your ,and others, research and findings though. :)
PS for my heavier shooting I HAVE A 1911 45 AND A RUGER 357 MAGNUM to rely on.
Hewy.

You want big enough to shave lead when you load or if it's chamfered and swages in then you want big enough that you can't push the ball in with your thumb.

OK then, let me ask this. Will someone be willing to send me a few different sized round balls to determine
what is best ? Of course I will pay them :P

Hi Hewy, IMO 0.319" isn't a large enough ball to eliminate chaingfires with the Uberti 1849. At least do 0.32". If you go that route using the 0-Buck with overball lube may be a good choice. You can get a lot of 0-Buck for a very low cost, see:

http://www.ballisticproducts.com/Super-Buck-Lead-0-8-lb_jar-320/productinfo/SBK10/

Track of the Wolf has balls that may be optimal, see:

Hi Hewy, PM me your address and I will send out some balls Priority Mail next week at no cost to you. I have company so won't be able to get the balls in the mail until Tuesday. Are there any other sized balls you need?

Also, did you try firing caps on that 1849? I needed to use #11s, 10s jammed the revolver.

Richard

A .319 will probably roll back out of the chamber.

Hawg, I measured the cylinder bores.      .313 would probably move from recoil.
That's if there is any recoil  ($!

It's not like the Italians are all that consistent with chamber sizes that anyone can say definitely what fits what revolver measuring them like you did is good

Now that is interesting. I guess , thinking the Italians use CNC machines there just might be some consistency.

The newer Ubertis and piettas are better than the old ones and ASM for consistency

Started this off trying to get info on a reloading company, and it has turned into
a discussion about .31 round ball sizes.
That is agood thing cuss it's really what I need to know ,at least be aware of.

Still looking to get a mold to cast round ball.
