Cartridge Boxes
« on: November 16, 2017, 08:11:46 AM »
I have been wanting to make a few of these for a while.  A drill press (which I don't have) would make this way easier, I ruined a couple when the wood partitions between the holes got too thin.  These are my first two, I have a few others and some additional ideas on decorating them but pretty pleased with how these turned out.

Hey Hewy,

The hinge is just a piece of thin linen or similar glued down with Elmer's glue.

On the lettering, I found a few images that I wanted to use, printed them out to match the size of the box and used a photo transfer process to transfer the image to the box.  In places you can see where it didn't stick very well and I rubbed it too hard and actually that probably helps it not look "too good".

One trick I did learn - if you get the partitions between the holes too thin (easy to do without a drill press), you can take a product called JB Kwik Wood (a two part epoxy that comes in a tube kind of like putty) and slide a little piece down in the hole and then take a dowel or something and smooth into the area that's a little too thin.  It fills the area well, bites into the wood and is hard as a rock in a matter of hours.

Just another fun BP project...

"Photo transfer process " Sounds hi-tech. I was thinking just print a copy and glue it to the box.
The result for your boxes makes them look aged.
Gives me motive to do a similar project. I have a drill press. L@J

Yea, well here's one sans the "photo transfer process".  This one is just glued to the box, I should probably swipe it with a piece of sandpaper to age it 100 years though, lol.  Although I like both versions.

Nice job 99whip.   They look great,  good choice of labels.   I like both versions too.  Sometimes it's nice to have things look as if they were brand new in 1865.

Your 1860 COlt looks brand new. Why should your cartridge boxes not look brand new too?  :)

Those are nice! I'll have to investigate the "photo transfer" process.

Thanks for the compliments, they are pretty dang easy to make.  I made a few other versions today, kinda fun researching and looking for the labels of the various manufacturers that provided paper cartridges.  Having some of these on hand (and filled) will make it a whole lot easier to visit the range without carrying a ton of stuff.
