Also found a Colt flask
« on: April 16, 2018, 08:18:30 PM »
It isn't an antique by any stretch of the imagination. The only marking is "Made in the USA" just under the brass spring stopper. In the below photos, the flask on the left is the new flask, the flask on the right is a Pedersoli reproduction. The new flask is smaller then the Pedersoli, but is noticeably heavier. It is made of much heavier gauge copper. Also, on the new flask, the pattern is only on the front of the flask, while on the Pedersoli, it is on both sides.

I would be proud to own either one of those, EM. Very nice collectibles.

That's a nice flask EM.  I wonder who the American manufacturer was.

Been looking, but haven't found anything yet. It is a much higher quality than the Pedersoli, which feels a little cheap next to it.

Think I have it figured out. If I'm right, it's a Colt W5047 flask, made to go with the Colt 2nd Gen pistols. Considering I paid less than 10 bucks for it, I'll live with the missing original spout. I wonder where I can find a slanted spout such as it would have come with. I tried my Italian spouts, and they fit, but they wouldn't be "right".

My circa 1973 Colt 2nd Gen 1851 Navy pistol with the Colt w5047 powder flask.

Great find EM. The only close-by gun store here is modern stuff only. Several years ago there was gun store that had modern AND vintage stuff. I remember they had 4 original Remington and Colt revolving carbines hanging on the wall rack. Sadly, they closed up.

Here are 7 of the nine different 2nd Gen flasks,  The two missing are variations of the Walker/Dragoon flask. All 2nd Gen flasks, except the Dixon bag flask, have Colt's Patent embossed on the face.

W5095 - Small Eagle flask with deep blue/black finish for Baby Dragoon, Pocket Navy, and Pocket Police flask
W5046 - Bag Flask in the US Grant Commemorative 1851 Navy
 W5047 V1 - Medium flask with deep blue/black finish for F series 1851 and 1861 Navies
 W5047 V2 - Medium flask with a blue/gray finish in the R.E.Lee commemorative 1851 Navy
W5047 V3 - Medium flask with a pewter finish for late C series 1851 Navies
 W5083 - Medium flask with a heavy blue/black finish for F series 1860 Armies. The W5047 V1
and W5083 are identical except for the powder spout.
W5056 3 - Walker/Dragoon flask - other variations are finished or stamped differently.
