I've decided to do a little knife making in my "spare time". I've had a few inquiries about knives I've made sheaths for. Mostly about knives my Uncle had made. Since he is not able to do anything any longer I figured I could make a few to go along with the sheath work I did for his knives.
I made this one to donate for an auction fundraiser to a non profit organization in New Mexico. This design is popular with ranch workers that use their knife daily. It has a handle made of Redwood burl and brass bolsters and pins. It fits in a crossdraw sheath that covers most of the handle with basket weave pattern on the pouch.

I'm using 1095HC steel that I can buy in rough blade blanks right now.

Very nice Mike! If you don't mind me asking, any idea what sort of work these guys use these knives for? I imagine quite a bit, but interested in the peculiarities.

Every thing from cutting hay bale strings and nets to doctoring cattle, draining abcesses , cutting ear tags, castrating calves. They all seem to like the sharp drop point on this particular blade.

If the blade is ± 3 - 3.5 inches it would be in the caping knife category.

That's right G Dog, it's a caper. Although I haven't seen any cowboys use it for skinning anything.

Thanks Mike and G! Being on the east coast, and my family only ever running a pig farm way back in the day, I'm always interested in real "ranch work". That is very cool to know. A friend of mine just starting doing these weekend long "survival courses" and has become a whiz with using sheepsfoot blades for just about anything. I've always carried Buck drop-points or clip points but nothing more than your usual cutting food/cardboard/rope/etc.

Two more knives of the same design. The first one has been donated again for a fund raiser. The handle is Curly Maple with brass and resides in a pancake sheath. The sheath is reversible for either right or left hand crossdraw.

The second one has rosewood for the handle and comes with a right hand crossdraw sheath. It will be auctioned off on a FaceBook auction page over the weekend.
