38 Special 1911 question
« on: April 24, 2019, 07:03:49 PM »
(7& ... so in the past I never bothered with learning what's required mod's wise to turn a Colt auto 45 into a 38 Special shooting machine. Lately I would like to learn what is necessary for the conversion.

Has anyone here been acquainted with the mod's needed for turning the 45 into a 38 Special?

I know Colt made some in .38 special but they only fed wadcutters. I don't know where you would get parts to convert one. .38 Super would be an easier conversion.

When I lived in Louisiana, Clark Custom Guns was still offering .38 Special wadcutter conversions.  IMO the magazines were the most complicated part.

I asked the same question on another forum and got the news that I did not want to hear.

Very expensive and unusual = NFT ... not for ted

Took my Pietta 38 spcl conversion to the range yesterday and it ALWAYS puts a smile on my face.

Thanks for the help. Gonna pass on my need for a 38 spcl shootin 1911 after all.

Some things just aren't meant to be. You'd be running a cartridge that's too long for the action(hence the wadcutters only) and rimmed on top of it. Colt made some of these. Maybe you can find one for around 2 grand.

Was at the NRA convention yesterday.  Talked to the Clark's folks a bit.  They don't do .38 Special 1911's anymore (they still offer S&W Model52 barrels).  Too much hassle, and they said they actually get better accuracy from their .38 Super barrels.  They had a stunning 50 yard test target to show.
