Cap & Ball shooting accessories for competition
« on: August 19, 2019, 12:10:02 PM »
When shooting at a CAS match, you have other duties to perform besides just loading and shooting your guns. You're assigned to a "posse" and must complete other tasks between shooting. Things like spotting for the shooter, picking up brass and bringing it to the shooter after he or she has shot. Things like that. Everyone has to pitch in.

You want to complete your loading and unloading duties in a timely manor, so you can help out with posse duties. In an effort to do that, I have come up with a few little do-dads to hang on my gun belt, and make loading a cap & ball gun go faster. Here's what I have come up with so far.

Loading a C&B gun is slow by nature. So a good capper speeds up the process quite a bit. I like the Polish Capper for this duty. I made a molded pouch for it, so it doesn't fly out while I'm running around.

You have to remove the wedge frequently on a Colt, so I made this little brass hammer for that task. It's a piece of 1/2" brass rod with a deer antler for a handle. It works great. A little tap on the wedge and it comes right loose. It also knocks it right back into place, and since it's soft brass, it doesn't mar the gun. It also has it's own molded leather pouch.

You also have to have your badge on and a knife is mandatory. So I made a sheath to match for the knife, and a badge holder for my belt. I hate having that thing pinned to my shirt.

Next on my list to make is, a cartridge box. it only needs to hold 10 rounds so it can be pretty small. I use paper cartridges because they're much faster than loose powder and ball. Plus, I don't have to carry a flask or other measure up to the line. One less thing to carry and keep track of. I'm going to get to work on it this afternoon.

Thanks Miguel. I'm trying. I have almost completed the cartridge box. It has been a bit of a challenge, but it's looking pretty good.

Looking good, Dave. Is that a Leathersmith Mike rig?

Thanks Capt.

I wish it was. I got the holster/belt rig from the same gentleman I bought my Open Tops from. He had the rig made just for them, and offered me a good deal on it. I really need to get new holsters. These are really nice, but I don't like the cross draw.

Okay, finished it up today. This will make loading my pistols fast and easy.

The little cartridge box is the perfect size, to load both pistols for one stage.

Ten cartridges handy, safe and secure.

I have much respect for guys like LeathersmithMike. This little pouch was tedious to make. I got carried away and wanted to line it, just to see if I could. It's not perfect but it will do for my purposes. My hat's off to Mike for the work he does.

Well, I don't have a Hog to stand next to anymore Mark. I sold off the last one a few months ago.

Good looking rig and setup Dave.  How do you like the Polish capper?

Thanks Fingers.

I like the Polish Capper a lot. It holds a whole tin of caps and then some. It doesn't jam and the caps don't fall out, like the inlines or snail cappers. There's no little spring steel lips to get out of adjustment. The only real drawback that I've found is, you pull straight back to remove the capper and leave a cap on the nipple. You still have to push each cap with your finger or a stick to make sure it's fully seated. I just use the end of the antler handle on my little wedge hammer.

How do you like the Polish capper?

Hi Fingers, I liked the Polish capper so much that I got one for my son-in-law. It's the only capper that works well for the 1858 Remington.

Regards,
Richard
