Nice job on the grips Dave.    I have done some casting with Armalite resin too.   Mostly for knife handles.    I use the slower setting resin which allows the bubbles time to dissipate before they become trapped.

Thanks Mike, I appreciate it. And your knife handles are beautiful!

I've used the slow product too, back in my slot car days. I made most of my bodies by "slosh" casting. So I needed it to go off slower to coat the entire mold. I may still try it on these grips too. I cast 5 sets today and 4 of them had voids. Can't have that. I'll use them to practice carving on. I really think I can make them look like stag.

In case anyone was curious about the slot cars, they were 1/32 scale. I made everything for them by hand. From the brass chassis, to the real rubber tires, to the drivers and engines, as well as the bodies. Here's one of the bodies on the left.

And here's a finished car. I love the old 30's-40's jalopies.

I figure, if I can make these things from scratch, I should be able to duplicate stag on the grips.

Everyone oughta have at least one pimp gun. ;)

I agree ... and it would be good of them to admit it.

Question:  If a person had grips made of Micarta, say on a Pietta 1860 for example, that were not snow white but off-white, ecru, egg shell sort of color but still pretty darn white, could you make a suggestion for a way to tone them down a shade or two?

I’m asking on behalf of a friend.  He’s looking for something a little deeper beige in tone.  L@J

You do beautiful work, Shotgun.  It's a talent.

G Dog, those are really nice grips. You want to just "mellow" them out a little? You could try leather dye. That stuff stains everything. (Ask me how I know) Maybe try it on the backside of the grips first, to see if it will give the desired effect.

Just dampen a rag with the dye, and buff it into the material like shoe polish. Just a suggestion.

And thanks for the compliment.

Since it is a Pietta, the grips I'm making should fit. I just tried them on another of my guns, and they fit perfect. I could try a little of the dye on one of the reject grips and see if it works. If so, you're welcome to a set so you don't have to possibly mess up those nice Micarta grips.

Here G Dog, just for you.

I took one of the rejects and dyed it with saddle brown leather dye. I did it just like I said. Wet a towel and rub it in like shoe polish. It made a pretty big difference.

Hi Dave, what is cost to gear up to make grips like you made? Would you post a parts necessary list?

Regards,
Richard

No problem Richard.

I used all Alumi-lite products for this project. Everything was obtained at Hobby Lobby so I could use their 40% off coupon.

Alumi-lite High Strength silicone rubber.    $29.99  (-40%)
Alumi-lite AlumRes casting resin               $29.99  (-40%)

You can only use one coupon, on one item per day at Hobby Lobby. So I bought one product and my wife bought the other. It's worth doing for the substantial savings. Each product costs $29.99 but with the coupon, it's $19.54 out the door.

I imagine you could order the products online, but you probably wouldn't receive the discount.

Lookin' darn good there. Great job on the slot cars too. I'll have to be careful......could be another rabbit hole to fall into.

Thanks Mick.

Which rabbit hole? Making grips or slot cars?  (7+"

I spent about 10 years foolin with the slot cars. I had a 500 sq ft room full of hand built, wood, routed slot track. I was WAAAAYYY down that rabbit hole!

Hi Dave, I tried to find those items at Hobby Lobby:

https://www.hobbylobby.com/find-savings/weekly-ad?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI783DwLj95AIVBD0MCh0ySwceEAAYASAAEgK2NPD_BwE

but can find the specific items you listed. They have kits, but I wouldn't know where to start. There is a 40% discount on one item per order.

Could you please specify the Hobby Lobby kit that may do the job for making grips?

Regards,
Richard

No problem Richard. Sorry about that.

This is the silicone rubber kit.

This is the resin kit.

Their 40% off deal is only good on one item of your purchase. And they will deduct the discount from the lowest price item. So you're better off only buying one item at a time. If you do it online, maybe buy one item today, and the other one tomorrow. But then you pay shipping on both.
