Nice job on the grips Dave.    I have done some casting with Armalite resin too.   Mostly for knife handles.    I use the slower setting resin which allows the bubbles time to dissipate before they become trapped.

I've used the slow product too, back in my slot car days. I made most of my bodies by "slosh" casting. So I needed it to go off slower to coat the entire mold. I may still try it on these grips too. I cast 5 sets today and 4 of them had voids. Can't have that. I'll use them to practice carving on. I really think I can make them look like stag.

In case anyone was curious about the slot cars, they were 1/32 scale. I made everything for them by hand. From the brass chassis, to the real rubber tires, to the drivers and engines, as well as the bodies. Here's one of the bodies on the left.






And here's a finished car. I love the old 30's-40's jalopies.





I figure, if I can make these things from scratch, I should be able to duplicate stag on the grips.

I agree ... and it would be good of them to admit it.

Question:  If a person had grips made of Micarta, say on a Pietta 1860 for example, that were not snow white but off-white, ecru, egg shell sort of color but still pretty darn white, could you make a suggestion for a way to tone them down a shade or two?   

I’m asking on behalf of a friend.  He’s looking for something a little deeper beige in tone.

G Dog, those are really nice grips. You want to just "mellow" them out a little? You could try leather dye. That stuff stains everything. (Ask me how I know) Maybe try it on the backside of the grips first, to see if it will give the desired effect.

Just dampen a rag with the dye, and buff it into the material like shoe polish. Just a suggestion.

Since it is a Pietta, the grips I'm making should fit. I just tried them on another of my guns, and they fit perfect. I could try a little of the dye on one of the reject grips and see if it works. If so, you're welcome to a set so you don't have to possibly mess up those nice Micarta grips.

Here G Dog, just for you.

I took one of the rejects and dyed it with saddle brown leather dye. I did it just like I said. Wet a towel and rub it in like shoe polish. It made a pretty big difference.

I spent about 10 years foolin with the slot cars. I had a 500 sq ft room full of hand built, wood, routed slot track. I was WAAAAYYY down that rabbit hole!

but can find the specific items you listed. They have kits, but I wouldn't know where to start. There is a 40% discount on one item per order.
