Hey Fellas. I have a quick update on the ivory grip project.
A gentlemen I know, over on the SASS board, started doing this for his guns. He actually came here and read my "how to" and did it all himself. His grips turned out really good too. He took it a step further and added carving and some medallions to his, to make them look like actual custom Colt grips. They are very cool.
Well yesterday, he went even further and made a set that look like very aged ivory, complete with deep cracks and all. I was instantly taken with them. So I decided to follow his lead this time, and make a set of my own. Here's where I am right now.
I think they look pretty close to something like fossilized mammoth tusk. Or just really old elephant ivory. I'm going to practice a little more on a couple more reject castings, then proceed on to the ones for real. I may even antique an 1860 Army to put these on.
