I spent about 10 years foolin with the slot cars. I had a 500 sq ft room full of hand built, wood, routed slot track. I was WAAAAYYY down that rabbit hole!

LOL....either or both.....there are lots of rabbits in Arizona......

Hi Dave, thanks for the links. I ordered both. The 40% discount applies to the highest priced item. Shipping is stiff and they collect state tax. $62.57 was the total cost. This looks like a nice project for the winter when I can't go outside shooting.

This looks like it will be great fun.

Great tip on using that silver 3M tape.

Also you could just drill two holes and put a screw and nut on your grips.

It's fun isn't it Mad Dog? 


You could drill holes and use an escutcheon on the grips, like a Remington. But I prefer the looks of them without the screw.

I'm sorry to say but, I have not made any with grips with the stuff I have.
And I got everything at Hobby Lobby too. Boy, this stuff adds up.
I did get some of the little dyes too...$4.99 a bottle.
My problem is making some type of box to put the grip in to hold the pink mold stuff.

I need to get a few of the dyes too Mad Dog. And as far as the box goes, cardboard and tape work just fine, and they're cheap/free. I've also used my kids Legos to construct the mold box, and modeling clay to secure the master in the box. That works really well too.

Here's a quick picture of how I did it when I had a bunch of small parts to make.

The resin and silicone should be okay, as long as it's in the factory sealed container. If it's open, it has a shelf life of about a year.

Hey Fellas. I have a quick update on the ivory grip project.

A gentlemen I know, over on the SASS board, started doing this for his guns. He actually came here and read my "how to" and did it all himself. His grips turned out really good too. He took it a step further and added carving and some medallions to his, to make them look like actual custom Colt grips. They are very cool.

Well yesterday, he went even further and made a set that look like very aged ivory, complete with deep cracks and all. I was instantly taken with them. So I decided to follow his lead this time, and make a set of my own. Here's where I am right now.



I think they look pretty close to something like fossilized mammoth tusk. Or just really old elephant ivory. I'm going to practice a little more on a couple more reject castings, then proceed on to the ones for real. I may even antique an 1860 Army to put these on.
