New 51 Navy

Hello All
I don't post much, but thought I would tell you all what I just ordered today. I have on the way from Cabelas, a Pietta 1851 Navy .36 cal, in "Ole Silver" finish. Should be here on Friday. All in  all, it cost me $309.00, with my military discount, and club points, plus tax.
 I have an 1860 Army, "Ole Silver", and i get along with it quite well.
When the 51 arrives, I'll give an out of the box review.

Good going, RD.  Once you get you a Remington you will have covered all the major food groups.  Starting with an Army and then a Navy is the way to go.  Congrats.

Well, the "Ole Silver 51" got here yesterday.
Was delivered with no glitches, and no damage.

To me it is a very nice pistol. The CNC machining seems to have made the Piettas  a lot better. The stock fits on the frames real well, and is not real shinny as on Uberti pistols. The metal to metal fit is excellent. The arbor fit is a little tight, as there is not much fore, and aft movement of the cylinder at full cock, definetly needs some adjusting, its too tight. I will wait till I shoot it to adjust it. Putting the BBL on the arbor to check the lenght, the BBL frame matched perfectly with the Cyl frame, with Cyl removed.
 I took the gun all apart, and was really surprised that I had to do nothing, to all the parts. I only stoned  the inside of the frame a little. There were no burs or chips residing. I did not like the forcing cone. I tried cutting it a little more with my forcing cone tool from Brownells, and make it a little better. That told me this metal is very hard compared to a blued Pietta. My cutting tool, didn't want to cut, like on the blued pistols. I did

manage to make it more to my liking.

So......... all in all, I am happy with my purchase

Congrats.  Good looking pistol. Especially like the grips. Pietta has fixed the trumpet horn grips of the past.

SSBQ has one and if memory serves he said it was polished steel.

Hi Dave, I asked Pietta what is the Old Silver finish. Their reply was that it was polished hardened steel. I tried to nitre blue it with poor results. There is obviously something done to the surface of the metal. My problems trying to nitre blue an Old Silver finished 1851 conversion thread:

IMO the only issue I have with the Old Silver finish (have an 1851 and 1860 Old Silver) is that the revolvers will never develop an aged patina.

           I'd guess that the "Old Silver" surface finish would have to be removed with abrasive blast and then re-polished before bluing would take.
