One ugly rescue mission
« on: May 01, 2020, 07:47:29 AM »
Going through my late-buddy's stuff and came across an old CVA Kentucky rifle kit. It was one of the kits someone completely butchered.

Note the missing nose cap, and the front of the stock and barrel held together with a shoelace.

They basically slapped the gun together and smeared stain on everything, including the metal.

Now, it just so happens that I have a set of the hardware from a CVA Kentucky rifle floating around. I may even have the barrel in one of the bins in the garage. I certainly have the missing nose cap. So I am going to try and rescue this thing. Yes, ity's just a CVA kit, but I can't leave it like this, and if I screw it up, I haven't committed a grave sin.

Hi Electric, you sure look like you have a lot of work ahead of you. Good Luck.

Maybe just give it to a youth to let him learn by working on it?

Regards,
Richard

That poor rifle.

They all deserve to get some love. Good for you for rescuing it.

Found the parts I had for a CVA Kentucky rifle. Most of the parts are different. Different age rifles, I guess. The nose cap, which is what I really needed is usable. It just needs to be filed out just a bit to fit. This barrel is just a little heavier than the barrel it came off.

Getting a start on it. I'm removing the glooped on stain, and at the same time filing down the metal to fit the wood. Some of the stain is into the wood so deep, I may never get it all out without radically changing the shape of the wood.

That old stain you can't get out will give it character. I once used oven cleaner to remove a hard finish from a stock on advice from several forums. DO NOT USE OVEN CLEANER!!! The first round didn't get it all so I did it again and where the cleaner touched bare wood it turned it black and it went deep. I scraped and I scraped and I scraped and I never did get it all out. So, I used a dark walnut stain and it actually came out looking pretty good.

That may have started as one of the less expensive kit guns, but that doesn't mean it won't shoot good. The barrels are all produced on the same production line. Same with the locks.

EM, are you deemed "essential", still able to work?

Yep. Eighty-eight hours a pay period. I took two weeks vacation right now. I go back on the 13th. My wife is also on vacation right now. She's essential, but working from home at the moment.

So, It has the standard two-piece stock. There is a brass spacer between the two pieces. However, when I attach the nose piece to the barrel, and butt the two stock pieces together, I'm left with something like an eighth inch gap at the front, between the stock and the nose piece.

I'm going to have to make a spacer to go in there. I'm thinking elk horn, if I have a piece large enough. If I have a large enough piece, I may replace the brass spacer with elk horn.

I love the sound of that. That would look really good!

With the nose cap and the front of the stock in place...

I now have this space in the middle of the stock to fill...

This is where I am thinking about a spacer of elk horn. I could also go with a spacer of contrasting wood.
