Armi San Marco 1851 Navy .36 Commemorative?
« on: July 07, 2020, 01:26:28 PM »
I found this on GB this morning, and the more I look at the more puzzling it is.

It is an ASM 1851 Navy Second Model .36 (squareback trigger guard and rectangular stop slots). Date code is AN/1985.

Red flag #1: It is being sold without the barrel/load lever/rammer assembly and the cylinder is sans nipples.

Red flag #2: The ornate cylinder is made of BRASS!

Red flag #3: There is no other engraving on the revolver anywhere!

I believe someone is trying to pass off an incomplete parts gun as a commemorative. The wood is nice but does not fit the gripframe.

My big question is: where did the cylinder come from? Possibly from a Denix (or similar) non-firing wallhanger?

Any comments appreciated!

Regards,

Jim

I've never seen a brass cylinder. Even on a Denix. Maybe it's gold "Damascene" plated, like some of the gaudy nickel and gold plated guns out nowadays?

That would make sense. Maybe try a magnet on the cylinder? Oh, hard to do when it is on an auction! Never mind.

I just noticed something else too. The recoil shield has been cut away for a cartridge conversion. I bet this is a bunch of parts found in a junk drawer, thrown together with an old box. The seller is just trying to make a buck on a bunch of junk he had laying around.

Funny thing is, he'd probably do better just selling the frame separate. Plenty of people want to build a cartridge gun, but don't have the aptitude to grind on the frame themselves.

With the recoil shield cut, it's a firearm now.  I wouldn't touch it!!

I agree wholeheartedly. As Dave said in reply#3, it is a parts guns that would probably sell better on Ebay.

The cylinder looks like something from American Historical Foundation.
