mine is a killer on the finger to open. after 4-5 times the finger will not work to open it any more. I have used all types of slick lubes, to no avail. am I the only one with this problem?

Toot, can you take your carbine down? I would suggest a slight smoothing of the lever and recess, plus some good gun lube. Mine has really smoothed up in operation. I might suggest slimming of the spring, but that would mean re-bluing it.

Mine is quite easy to open now. I haven't had it out for a shoot for some time, but do have some loaded ammo for it. Also have a bunch of bullets cast up.

To find out how much force I need to apply on my original Smiths, I balanced it on the lever over a brass dowel (photo)
The carbine weighs in at 3.583 kilograms = 7lbs 15 oz (7.899 kbs).
With a very light downward touch the breach opens.
So the opening force is 7.9 lbs in my case,

Funny you brought this up. I made a trade offer for a Smith yesterday. Just waiting to hear back if it was accepted or not. I really want one.
