Robert E. Lee's Confederate army invades Maryland, starting the Antietam Campaign.

Except for the invasion of Okinawa (April ‘45)  Antietam
killed more Americans per minute than any other fight we ever fought.  The dead American count racks up quick when we fight each other.

The term "United States" is adopted by the Continental Congress to be used instead of the "United Colonies."

California, in the midst of a gold rush, enters the Union as the 31st state.

1863
The Union Army of the Cumberland passes through Chattanooga as they chase after the retreating Confederates. The Union troops will soon be repulsed at the Battle of Chickamauga.

Lumber and furs are the first cargo to leave New Plymouth in North America for England.

1813
The nine-ship American flotilla under Oliver Hazard Perry wrests naval supremacy from the British on Lake Erie by capturing or destroying a force of six English vessels.

1861
Confederates at Carnifex Ferry, Virginia, fall back after being attacked by Union troops. The action is instrumental in helping preserve western Virginia for the Union.

General George Washington and his troops are defeated by the British under General Sir William Howe at the Battle of Brandywine in Pennsylvania.

Indians incited by Mormon John D. Lee kill 120 California-bound settlers in the Mountain Meadows Massacre.

A 10-day truce is declared between generals William Sherman and John Hood so civilians may leave Atlanta, Georgia.

James Abercromby is replaced as supreme commander of British forces after his defeat by French commander the Marquis of Montcalm at Fort Ticonderoga during the French and Indian War.

Quebec surrenders to the British after a battle which sees the deaths of both James Wolfe and Louis Montcalm, the British and French commanders.

After waiting all day for a Union attack which never came at Antietam, Confederate General Robert E. Lee begins a retreat out of Maryland and back to Virginia.

Union cavalry troops clash with a group of Confederates at Chickamauga Creek.

Union General William Rosecrans blames his defeat at Chickamauga on two of his subordinate generals. They are later exonerated by a court of inquiry.

Colonel Ronald Mackenzie raids a war camp of Comanche and Kiowa at the Battle of Palo Duro Canyon, Texas, slaughtering 2,000 of their horses.
