Winchester 1885 High Wall 45-70 Uberti Replica - First Range Day

Just got this beauty this week, yesterday was the first chance I had to get it to the range. I love these single shot rifles especially in 45-70.

Due to mostly my fiddling around I only got out to 50 yard - 1" group - 3 rounds. The front globe sight has a post with the little ball on top which I am swapping out for the small aperture for the next trip to the range - hope to get it out to 100 yards which is the max at that particular location then the fun begins. I recently joined another club that has a long range bay set for 200, 400, 600, 800 and 1000 yards

Very luck around here - my regular club, Sunbury Shooting Association, is about $60.00USD year and Springfield Club is about $150.00USD year (it's the one with the long range bay, plus it has cowboy action bay and a practical shooter set up. They even have an heated indoor gun bay you can shoot from in the winter but you still have to go out in the weather to put up your targets.

I also love the Highwall, having 2 Browning rifles myself (40-65 and 45-90), plus a couple of originals in small calibers. I do have a long range shooting club about 24 miles from me, but I have never joined. It is moderately priced at $335.00 a year, with a $120.00 reduction for working at the range. This is the Winnequah Rifle Club, commonly referred to as the Lodi Range, for the town where it is located. They have ranges out to 1000 yards and host a black powder cartridge rifle shoot a couple of times a year. I don't shoot long range often enough to join the club. I have visited a few time to observe the nationally known shooters; they are amazing! And they are friendly and freely offer advice.

Range Day - Take 2

 Another fun day at the range with this gun , shot (2) targets at 50m and 2 targets at 100m to sight in - very happy so far. Took a short video for (2) shots just to see what I was doing with the trigger pull.

I just noticed the powder-coated bullets; what is your powder and charge? Are you able to get black powder up there? Would you shoot BP if it was available?

Hi Mk, so far I have tried 3 different powders under (2) different 405g bullets (store bought flat base and home cast hollow base).

Goex BP - 50g and 70g
Triple7 - 43g and 55g
Trail Boss - 19g

I'm hoping to cast some flat base 500g bullets to load over 70g of blackpowder this weekend

Great looking rifle. HiWall's are a favorite of mine. Mine hs been rebarreled to 38-55 in a heavy #4 barrel. I had holes d&t'd for my long Malcolm scope. Still have the 45-120 barrel that tempts me to reinstall but my forend is carved out for the heavy Winchester #4 barrel contour so need to find another  forend for the Miroku Winchester "HUNTER" model.

Great job on your video. Show's off your rifle in its natural environment. Again, great rifle.

Thanks Ted, I have made some changes to my HiWall since I originally made this post, I have added the the Hilux Malcolm short scope and upgrade the scope mounts front and back to the MVA Silhouette mounts. I am currently building a 38-55 using a new Green Mountain barrel and a 1910 Remington Rolling Block #5 action.
