Twister "kit"
« on: August 23, 2020, 02:14:05 PM »
I have been working on the gun that jaxenro offered, off and on over the last couple of weeks. This is what I got.

The gun was complete except for grips and grip screws. I made a pattern for grips.

This gun was never fired! As it is, the hammer will not move far enough to cock; the spring interferes. I have been using my Dremel tool with doubled cut-off discs to deepen the hammer spring "shelf". That hammer is hard!!

The hammer spring problem is really puzzling. It must just not be the correct spring.

Believe me, I have tried different springs. I have the original as I didn't want to modify that. I am now on my 4th spring. As the hammer pivots,  the "shelf" moves to the rear. The cutting of the "shelf" seems to be working....to a degree. I can now (forcefully!) cock the hammer. The trigger pull is about 90 pounds! In fact,  I can't pull it with my finger. I had to use pliers! And so the process continues....

Thanks Hawg. Yeah, my spring looks identical. The problem is that as the hammer pivots, it hits the end of the spring. On a couple of the "sacrificial" springs I made if I shorten the spring so it doesn't interfere, it will slip off the rear of the "arm" on the rear of the hammer when it is cocked. Thus the deepening of that area.

Here you can see what I mean about the rear ??? hammer face moving back when it is cocked. I'm hoping someone can come up with a solution to this problem!

Mazo, it looks like you destroyed the hammer. Here is mine with hammer down.

With hammer cocked.

Looking at Hawg's picture, it looks like the spring was supposed to ride on the lower, smaller notch.

Aaah! :'( I should have asked for help long ago. Hawg and Dave, I think you are both right in your assessments. I'll see if I can find a new hammer. I have a website that lists parts, hope they are up to date.

If you can't find a hammer Em, you might be able to fix it. Try cutting a slot in the hammer, right where the notch stuck out. Then cut a small piece of steel to fit the slot and solder it on place so it doesn't move. Then shape that piece to replicate the both that you cut off. I hope I'm describing it well enough.

That's what I'd do if it were mine.

Thanks Dave. Yeah I was going to try that method of repairing the hammer. I now have a new one coming from Deer Creek, but I may still try the repair. Ignorance and power tools....the bane of gunsmithing. Looks like I failed on both counts! ^j) :-[
