Your favorite lubes?
« on: December 17, 2013, 09:02:47 PM »
Me, I have two.
For general light oiling and wiping the bore and outside of the gun, I prefer Rem Oil. The pump spray goes a long, long way when sprayed on a rag.
For internals, arbor pins, cylinder ratchets, etc. I prefer Lubriplate AA650 or AAA650, but any white lithium grease will suffice.
Anyone else have a preference for their revolvers?

Hi, since discovering Ballistol, I use it on everything, even our kitchen cabinets. My wife used to get sick when I cleaned my firearms with Hoppe's #9. Now that I use Ballistol, she lets me clean my firearms on the dining room table. She says that Ballistol smells like catpiss, but it doesn't make her sick. Occasionally, just for the memories, when the wife is not around, I open a bottle of Hoppe's and take a sniff.

BTW, I also like RemOil, it drys and doesn't leave an oily film.

Regards,
Richard

My favorite boolit lube is Emmert's (chronicled elsewhere on this forum)

There are any number of good gun lubes; and truth be known, they are probably all very similar. My go-to Boolit lubes for black powder use are SPG, Thompson Black Powder Lube, and I still have nearly 2 pounds of bulk old Gar black powder lube. For muzzleloading rifle patches, I make up a mix of beeswax and bear oil,  and adjust to the hardness I need.  Olive oil and beeswax also works good.

I use Remoil for actions or sometimes Mobil1 or trans fluid, just whatever is handy. For wipe downs I prefer 3N1 for the smell but Mobil1 or trans fluid works. For patch/wad lube I use olive oil and for bullets I use  beeswax and olive oil or Crisco.

Moose milk (ballistol and water)  is my favorite cleaner/lube.  Since using flintlocks real, pure mink oil gets my nod.  I have done lots of testing and the mink oil was the only lube that didn't migrate into the powder.  I went so far as to let 1 flinter sit for a year and a half.  It still fired and held same POI as just loaded patches.  For my walker I wanted to harden things up a touch.  I melt and add a smidgen of either beeswax or carnuba...how much you add depends on how much mink you use but go thin and test for hardness before you add more.  When loading my Walker repro I sometimes use a over powder card (cut from a cereal box) before I put in my home made wonder wads.
