Hawg, this is an Allen & Thurber 36 caliber. It was made in Worcester, Ma. and has a patent date of 1837.

The barrel is also stamped "Cast Steel". I wonder if this one was carried to California in the gold rush?

You are one of the most knowledgeable guys I know, so Manhattan wouldn't be a bad guess at all. There was also Blunt and Syms (sp?) and maybe a couple of other makers. I built a Classic Arms kit a few years ago, but sold that soon after.
