Now I gone and dunnit...
« on: November 10, 2020, 08:08:58 AM »
Well, here we go...first .45 Colt BP cartridge round. Was playing around setting up the dies last night and figured I might as well run one off instead of doing a dummy round, so without further ado...

.45 Colt, 35gr by volume of 3F Graf powder (Goex) (32gr by measured weight) and a 250gr cast bullet for an approximate MV of 885fps...should be a real knuckle-thumper. COL @ 1.585 and taper crimped using RCBS 'Cowboy' dies.

I think, (no, I know) you are gonna like shooting those! Better load up a bunch of 'em as they get used up fast.

Nicely done Capt.

I agree with Em, load a bunch. They're like Lay's potato chips, you can't have just one!

I generally try not load too many before testing out a load. I guess 50 wouldn't hurt.

Not much to test here Capt. You've assembled a pretty standard .45 Colt load. Now get out there and make some smoke with em!

Yeah, and that's about half of what that Walker conversion could handle. They don't make a .45 LOOOOOOOOONG Colt, do they?
Anybody tried this?

I just happen to have  some 454 brass .  .  .    8)

As an aside, I'll be running some "hot" loads for testing the Colt open top pattern.  Hopefully I'll be using that as proof  for my argument that the open top pattern is stronger than the Remington pattern.    :-X

Just my opinion, but I don't think you will gain much, if anything, from using the longer brass. The chamber is only so long and the bullet has to go in there too. Now...I have used that longer brass to make shot loads for my 45s.

But they're talking about a Walker chamber Em. Plenty of room for looooonger cases.

Captainkirk, that is pretty much the same load I just shot at a Cowboy match this past Sunday. No problem with knockdown targets!
Only Blackpowder is interesting.

OK, I missed that little bit. I was still on the 45 Colt. (l"

So, while I had bought a new Lee Production pot, digital lead thermometer and Lyman dies and handles so I can cast my own 535gr .458 Postell boolits, I decided that should be more of a backup than standard fare. Midway had Montana Precision Swaging 535gr .458 Postells pre-lubed with SPG lube, sized, and ready to go, so I grabbed 50 of them and a Satern black powder aluminum/brass funnel while I was at it, and used my Midway 'birthday discount' last month! Note that they covered the boolits with a Saran-type wrap to help keep the lube soft and pliable and they are very well packaged in styrofoam packing. I was fairly impressed!
I should be ready to start cranking out .45-70 BP rounds for my Sharps just as soon as I can clear a path to my reloading bench!

I figured that at 535 grains, I should get no more than 13 boolits from a pound of lead...and all my lead is pure, so I'd need to get several pounds of Lyman #2 from Rotometals or similar, not to mention the time it takes to cast and clean up after myself. This seemed like such an easier and faster solution, so I went for it.

Actually, the Rotometals price for Lyman #2 is pretty reasonable...
