Square back TG's

My question here concerning our beloved 1851 Colt navy is thus.

Why do we find the square back Colt the only navy that has been replecated by the Colt company.

I do not find ANY  original civil war Colts wearing this foolish square back finger gouger grip frame. ALL the 51's I find for sale and photo's of are all with the favorite round bow trigger guard ... vintage 51's that is.

I believe that the square back bow to be kinda rare in fact on vintage 51's.

Am I wrong here? Do I live under a bridge and remain un-schooled in this area. My most favorite revolver is delegated as being mostly of the square back bow on the trigger guard instead of the WAY MORE COMFY round trigger guard bow.

Just wish that Colt manufacturing would have made the exelent second gen revolvers in the most manufactured style as that of the hay day of the 51 Colts life.

Ok ok ... I will creep down off my box for now ... but ... I reserve the rite to submit yet other rants of stuff that enters my feeble mind and refuses to leave till I turn it out for others to marvel at.

HA  (jh

PS I will explain my stance on model 1860 Army's with that most ridiculous  and RARE 2 extra button screws for holding the removable shoulder stock  that was only rarely found on vintage 60's ... just try to find any newly manufactured revolvers without these abonimations!

Ok done now.

When Colt was trying to sell his 1851 Navies to the Army, there was a Col. Talcot in the US Army procurement section who liked the squareback TG as a throwback to the Walker and all of the Dragoons until the 3rd Model. Talcot was convicted in some sort of courts martial, and after that Colt went to the various round trigger guards. The squareback TG Navies (1st and 2nd Models) were purely a political thing for Colt to sell revolvers.

I happen to like them.

Colt did, but as time went on they needed to sell more guns, thus the 3rd Gen and the Colt Blackpowder Products guns, which are only Colts under limited license. If you have not acquired it, Eric Deaton's excellent book about Colt revolvers is available for a good price on Ebay.

I have both square and rounded trigger guards.  I really do like the square back guard much better as far as looks go.  I find it very eye catching.  I bought my first Colt Navy forty-five years ago.  I never get tired of looking at it.  The round guarded all pretty much look the same.  The square back to me stops the eye as you follow the inside of the curve on the grip frame.  I find it a pleasant break visually.  It tells the eye to stop and take a good long look.

My stainless Colt Navy has the square back trigger guard as well.  That is a whole other ball of wax !

But thatÂ’s just me.   8)

Well, owning a first and two second Dragoons as well, as a Walker, I can state that the squareback TG is much more visually appealing to my eyes than the rounded TG of the third model. As far as knucklebusting, my Remmies are worse than any of the Colts. I guess it's a matter of personal preference...and maybe hand size or finger length. For me, the grip most suited to my hand is the 1860 Army "plow handle" grip...

I like the looks of the squareback, but it busts my knuckle. So it's round ones for me.

My hit is that most modern folks like the square back trigger bow look. Each to their own ... which is why I love this sport so much. I try to stay with what works for me and the comfort while shooting.

Personally I very much enjoy the vast majority of the "working" 1851's. Probably because of having large knarley busted fingers that grew long on my 6 foot 5 inch frame. To me ... pretty is as pretty does. I look at the working revolvers in their era and see most being the round trigger guard. Just my observance.

I very much enjoy 36 cal revolvers for the sleek and balanced feel. Perfect in most every respect. I also am in love with the Army grip frame ... it probably fits my overgrown hands the best if truth be known.

The square backed trigger guard was only on 1st and 2nd model Navies through serial number 4200. After that, Navy trigger guards had various sizes and shapes, small round, large round, square, etc.

IIRC, The reason why the majority of replicas have square back trigger guards is because the pattern revolver that was use to start the cap and ball industry was a second model Navy parts gun with a square back.

I have both squareback and round triggerguard '51s, all Uberti's. I find when shooting two handed, the round guard is more comfortable. However, the squareback fits my hand perfectly when shooting one handed. I was lucky a couple of years ago to find a consecutive pair of Uberti squarebacks and they are probably my favorite '51s.
Only Blackpowder is interesting.
