What sort of flask for 1860 Army?
« on: February 11, 2021, 07:18:26 PM »
Hi, gents. Having recently come into purchase of a 1860 Army, I would like to purchase an inexpensive pistol flask. The flask and spout I use on my rifle are way too large, and I want to have one dedicated to the pistol. It does not have to be historically correct. Any suggestions from you gents?

Bob, I have a small pistol flask very similar to the one in our current header photo. It pours roughly 30 grains of 3F or Pyrodex P and works quite well. I believe Track of the Wolf carries a good assortment of pistol flasks.

I got tired of original style flasks coming apart and got one of these back in the 80's. http://outfittersworld.com/cva-range-flask-5-oz-30-grain-spout-brass-ac1400/

I have one exactly like Hawg's. It works great for the range, and they're pretty inexpensive.

You are not limited to just that spout; you can get several with different capacities for other guns.

Here are what my flasks look like.

I had a couple of cheap ones like that original style. I guess I didn't take good enough care of them or was too rough with them. I got one small dent in them and they came apart at the seam.

How unfortunate for you. I had mine a long time and used it in competition at the pre 1840 Rendezvous that I used to go to. A little sentimental value goes with mine.

I carry a silver plated example of this flask.  It is a heavy duty flask that I've been using for over 15 years.  JedediahStarr sells the silver plated version.

Yours is most likely a lot better quality than mine were.

I been using the round CVA flask like the one Hawg Showed. I have three of the tall ones and two of the short ones, all with different load tubes. just depends on which gun I'm using at the time. Never had a problem with them, real easy to use. Befour someone says it I am careful with the powder I put in them, and never carry all of them at the same time.

If you carry more than one flask of the same kind, it is easy to differentiate between them. I typically carry flasks with ffg and fffg in them. I used a small triangular file and made 2 and 3 small nicks on the brass head to designate the powder in the flask.

Howdy, gents...in between the fits of bad weather there was some really good weather so I dragged the Army out to my friend's farm land and managed to fire off nearly 100 round balls. Suffice it to say I'm hooked on these black powder six guns and I'm looking for another one if I get my stimulus check! Thank you for all of your help!
