I don't know if I can make it a "better looking" repair or not, but I can try. My main concern is to make it a sound repair, thus the thinking of the rawhide wrap. I'll try it without.

Hey, if it doesn't work you can always do the rawhide later.

AG had asked me if the barrels were Damascus and I said they were. I need to modify my answer: they are laminated or wound wire where a strand of steel is wound around a mandrel, welded and then bored smooth.  Damascus is a combination of iron and steel strips or rods that are hammer welded together many times, creating the pattern and then wrapped around the mandrel and welded.

Oh yeah! I believe this is the model 1889 shotgun, made in 4 grades. The top grade was the Damascus barrel model. Even at that time, Damascus was considered a quality steel for making barrels.
