A new Pennsylvania
« on: May 20, 2021, 10:42:57 AM »
I've been wanting a nice flintlock for a while now, so I've been on the lookout for one. Last week, Capt Kirk informed me of one for sale on another forum so I went and had a look. It was pretty much everything I was looking for and the gentleman wanted to trade instead of sell. Right up my alley! So we struck a deal, and now this beauty is mine!

It's a Traditions in .50 cal. I really like the French Gray look to the lock and barrel. The wood is also not typical of these "cheaper" guns. It looks like walnut to me and is very nicely finished. On top of that, it has brass inlays all over it. I just think it's a great looking gun.

Just need to gather a few things for it, so I can shoot it. I need to figure out which size ball will be best for it and get a mold. Then it will be time to make some smoke!

Looks like a winner to me, Dave! There is a way to slug a barrel on a rock lock or percussion rifle, insert a length of solid brass rod (a foot or more) and then drive in your un-patched slug. Once it's in a few inches, hold the gun muzzle down and allow the rod to drive the slug back out.
As for supplies, TOW should have pretty much everything you need.

wow.... lots of very cool inlay!!

why not start with putti g some shot down the tube in a capsule? that would get you on the range without having to wait on much of anything....it dont work worth a crap to kill anything but with your paper rolling skills, you could make a shot capsule pretty easy....

also consider the LEE Real bullet.. I shoot them from my 50 and they are nice. i know rb are your ultimate goal, but in the meantime, that beauty needs shootin...

I wonder of TOW has any ball molds in stock. I've been reading that even they are hard to get right now. Guess I'll head over there today and have a look.

Those are good idea Mark. I've heard the Lee REAL bullet is very accurate in these guns.

Wow, just looked on TOW. They are out of stock on almost every mold. Crazy.

Mark, the REAL's don't work well with a slower twist barrel...not sure what Dave has?...they are recommended for 1:48 or faster twists. I had some real issues getting mine to shoot straight out of my .50 Lyman Trade Rifle.

Thanks fellers. It's a rabbit hole indeed!

Someone mentioned twist rate. This one is a 1/66.

REALs may not perform well with a slow twist rate like 1:66. I can send you a few if you want to try them out.

REALS will work ok with a 15 or 20 grain charge. (7+" 1:66 is a round ball or minie ball twist.

Obviously the previous owner liked the rifle and "dressed it up" a bit.

Obviously the previous owner liked the rifle and "dressed it up" a bit.

If he added the inlays, he was very good. They look great.

He indicated that it was a "special edition" and came that way. it also has a longer than normal 41" barrel.

It doesn't look like a two piece stock. If it is he blended it very well. Very nice rifle. Makes me want one.
