Posting a video
« on: May 21, 2021, 11:22:20 AM »
I gots a question.....can someone 'splain to a computer illiterate old guy how to post a video here? A few years ago, I had tried posting a video of me firing my scale model mortar. It only showed up as one still picture. Someone (maybe Hawg or Tom-ADC?) did something magical and got it to post as a video. I would like to know if it is something I could do.

Hi Mazo, I seem to remember, if my memory is still functioning, that this question has been up before, and someone answered that one has to do it via Youtube. We should, in my humble opinion, be able to post a short MP4 shot from our phones, but methinks there is a size limit to what we post on here. Maybe the gurus might come up with something?

Em, as it stands right now you have to put it on YouTube, then post the link here. Let me do a little digging and see if there's a setting that will let us post video direct from our computer. I think there probably isn't though. Every forum I've ever posted on has to have a YouTube link.

I'm on it and will report back shortly..........

Okay. Here's what I found out so far.

We can't post directly to the forum, our software doesn't support it. The video has to be hosted. But, there are many ways to host your video. YouTube isn't the only way.

You can put your video into Flickr and do it the same way you do pictures. Or you can put it on Google and link to it that way. Same for Facebook if you have that. Just copy the link from your browser and paste it into the post. It should show up just like the YouTube videos do.

Just tried linking to a Google Drive video. It works, but it only posts the link. No preview. I'll try Flickr and see how that works.

That's not gonna work either. It just posts the video as a picture.

Sorry guys. I'm trying.

Dave. Just seeing if this works. You mentioned being born at Fort Benning.. Was this about the proper timeframe?
Only see as an attachment as I did not link to a hosted video but actually uploaded a local video from my videos on my PC.
You can right click on the attachment and open in new window to view it. The new window
will open but you have to right click again in to open then it will play. :-/ Is there a particular video file type that it has to be in order for it to show up
in a playable window on the site here? MP4, WMV, QuickTime etc.??

Hi Zulch,
I tested all four:
the .mov downloads and starts directly
the .mpg downloads but has to be opened by VLC
the .wmv dito
the .webm opens directly
Seems the .mov extention would be the simplest, as one gets it right out of a camera.
Now then, did you just attach the movies as if they were ordinary photos???
