Problem
« on: May 28, 2021, 12:00:08 PM »
Today I de-greased the Pietta 1860 Army.
All I did was remove the barrel and rod and the cylinder.
All done I re-assemble and on 4 chambers I cock the hammer and all is well.
On 2 chambers, the hammer does not stay back. It returns to half cock.
Is this an example of Pietta's quality or it me? Did I do something wrong?
I'm sure you gents have encountered this before.
Your experience is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Only on two chambers? Hmmm. Was it working before you took it apart? If you hold the trigger forward when you cock it will it hold?

No, it's not indicative of Pietta's quality. Something is definitely wrong.

How did you degrease the gun? Did you get the internals wet at all? It sounds like the something is hung up. Maybe a blast with some WD-40 then some lube on the parts.

I can't honestly say if it worked before.

I will try the WD-40.

Did you try holding the trigger forward while you cock it? On the chambers that work does the hammer have any over travel?

No over travel on the ones that work.
I just tried holding the trigger forward on the 2 chambers that do not work and that did made it catch.
So, what does that tell us?I

Many thanks.

It could be the trigger side of the trigger/bolt spring is broken but seems to me if it was it would be more intermittent about when it catches. If no hammer overtravel it could be the hand is a smidge too long. Either way some disassembly is required.

Trigger spring. Something ain't right. Disassemble and reinstall everything taking care that the trigger spring is centered and not dragging on the cavity.

Captain
I've never been inside the internal workings of one of these percussion revolvers. In order to have any chance of doing what you say I would need someone to take pity on me and give me  step by step, screw by screw instructions. I'm willing to do so but need clear precise instructions. I know that's a lot to ask but that's the only way I can attempt it.

Well, the good news is I was able to disassemble the gun as per the video. And I cleaned some gunk out in various spots and I found a couple of screws that were not tight at all. When I reassembled them I tightened them. Not blood tight but tight.
And now for the bad news....no improvement. Problem still exists on 2 chambers only.
I can get the hammer to full cock by moving the trigger forward as I'm cocking the hammer, as was suggested by Hawg.
That's where I'm at currently.
