Original Smith carbine
« on: July 24, 2021, 11:37:55 AM »
If you have read my recent posts, you know that we had a very enjoyable visit with old friends who have found their way back to this part of the country. Steve likes to restore old guns and he has an original Smith carbine he is working on. He made a replacement action latch-spring and actuating lever as they were missing. He needs to make the buttstock now and I told him I would send a tracing of my repro Smith stock.

I will see if he will send a picture or two of that gun.

I've always had a hankering for a Smith. An original would be really cool.

I am waiting to see if he will be sending pictures. They had moved to the Custer, SD area nearly 20 years ago and he found several nice old guns (and some in rough shape that he managed to get functioning). We had kept in touch, but it was great seeing them in person.

Hi Mazo,
do you think a photograph of an original Smiths' stock with a base line and some measures would be of any use for your old buddy? He could do a Doodle Grid and pick out the neccesary measurments.

Thanks Len; I'm sure he wouldn't turn your offer down. I had thought about contacting you, but didn't want to be a nuisance.

No problem, Mazo. I'll just try to find a good background for photo.

OK, here is the first photo. The Colt in the picture is an original London model. I have it posted on the Colt Navy topic.

Those are awesome. They look to be in great shape for their age too.

I also like the holster. It's unique.

Hi Mazo, I finally got around to take some pics of the original's stock. Did send some more pics by email in case this picture gets distorted.
