Finally!!!!!!
« on: August 08, 2021, 08:45:07 PM »
Finally! Just finished up loading my first full box (20) of .535 Postells in .45/70 for the Sharps. It took a bunch of monkey bid'ness and playin' around, but they are all sittin' pretty and they chamber nicely in the Sharps. I did not use a drop tube at this time. I managed to squeeze 60gr of 2F Grafs in under the fiber wad, and used the Montana Precision Swaging compression die to pack it all down good and tight. The MPS Postell bullets are lubed with SPG BP lube. It took quite a while to load 20 into new Starline brass, but I got-r-dun and they are waiting to be launched from the Pedersoli at the earliest convenience! (7&
I'm sure I will develop the typical shortcuts one ends up with, as it was I used my adjustable BP measure to meter out the 60 gr which was quite time consuming. But in the end, I am grinning like a Cheshire cat to know I have 20 rounds of thumpin' BP ammo to feed my Sharps!
As I load more and refine my technique some, I'll try to get some photos and a brief write up going. Stay tuned!!! L@J

Oh yeah! You're on a roll now. It doesn't take long to empty a pot of lead casting those 535 grain Postells does it? Thirteen per pound!

I know, right? It was way easier to buy them pre-cast and pre-lubed even though I have the mould, handles and lead pot to cast the Postells!
That Postell is one big, honkin', hunka hunka burnin' lead!
As you know, Em...the dang things are top-heavy!!! (7+"

Yep, and the recoil will be noticeable with these as well!

I'll bet, but I'm guessing it's not as bad as hot smokeless loads.

Unless you're recoil sensitive 60 grains will be pretty mild recoil wise.

Congratulations!  I'm sure you will have a great time at the range with those loads.  I cast and shoot the same Lyman Postel bullet in my 1874 .45-70 and also in my .45-110 Quigley Rifle with 100 grains of ffg.  That gun weighs 14.2 lbs., but it still really lets you know when you pull the trigger.  I've only shot it off the bench, but I'm hoping that sitting on a stool with the proper height cross sticks that the recoil will be more manageable.  You might try that with yours and see if it is more comfortable for you to shoot.  Best of luck, Gray Fox

Yes, shooting from a bench always accentuates recoil.
