Update: 1884 Springfield Trapdoor 45-70
« on: September 14, 2021, 12:32:27 PM »
I bought this 1884 Springfield Trapdoor 45-70 almost (2) years ago , this is an original antique manufactured in 1889 in beautiful condition with 95% bluing intact, colour case hardened action and wood is dark but with minimal wear. Mfg cartouche and inspectors stamp are both clearly visible and it has the original Buffington Ladder Sight. I finally decided this year to get serious about load development and the work is paying off - the target in the pic is from my range visit today - 5 rounds - 3" group at 100 yards. Winchester Brass, WLR Primer, 65g Goex ffG load using a drop tube and compression die with 0.030 card wad op top and a 405g , 0.459 diameter RNFP Hollow Base bullet. Not too shabby for a 120+ year old gun with iron sights and a 64 year old near sighted shooter even if it is off the bench.

I'm glad to see somebody shooting in these trying times. It has been well over a year since I have taken anything out to make smoke. Even the neighbors haven't been shooting. Out here we can all shoot in our yards.

I miss the days when I could do that.

Can't generally shoot in our yards up here but you are allowed to shoot on crown land.

You did so well with those 405s that I ordered up 50 from Midway (with free shipping today) of the Montana Precision Swaging 405gr FN boolits to see how they stack up against the 535gr Postells I've been loading out of the Sharps. I'm not unhappy in the least with the Postell, but that's a boatload of lead to be flinging downrange just to make the gong sing or punch holes in paper! We'll see how they stack up next session out.
I have the Lyman mould for the Postell but haven't tried casting them yet. I would only be getting roughly 13 boolits per pound of lead.
