Doin' the Walker Waltz
« on: September 15, 2021, 06:29:30 PM »
You may have followed my exploits with getting a totally unshootable CVA Walker, to making it function, to sending it to the Goon for "the works" plus action shield and cap rake and fitment of a Howell's .45 LC cylinder as well. The proof's in the pudding, as they say, and fit and function of both cylinders was flawless, and the Goonerized action was superb. Here's my son emptying out a cylinder full of 50gr charges of Graf's 3F, Wonder Wads, and .454 round balls...

I also put the conversion cylinder through it's paces with my .45 Colt handloads; 250gr hard cast boolits over 35gr of Graf's 3f black powder. True to form, the Walker managed to drop it's loading lever every shot but one, as shown being caught in the act here...

Glad you finally posted those Capt. I for one have been dying to see that thing being fired!

Have you tried deepening the notch and re-curving the spring on the lever? I've seen that touted as the ultimate solution for the Walker lever drop.

Goon worked it over, but alas...

Try it. 5 minutes with a file will probably do wonders.

That's what Goon did.
I'm used to just reaching down and flipping it up. When you shoot Dragoons all the time it becomes second nature! :laughing4:

A thin narrow strip of leather tied under the lever. Not pretty but it works. (@+

Yes, and an elastic hair tie works as well. Not period correct, but... (7&

OK, so just what did the old timers do? I can't speak to the problem as mine is still new in the box!  :blushing:

I would imagine they used a leather loop.

I imagine that the originals didn't have this problem. But if they did, the men using them most likely just pushed the lever back into place and kept firing. Without whining about it.

Was I whining? :( I hope not!

No Sir! I just meant that Cap'n Walker's men were under fire, and didn't have time to worry about hair ties and leather straps. They were too busy being shot at.

They did as well as the dragoons. That's why Colt was always improving the latching system.
