Hawken build(pic heavy)
« on: October 27, 2021, 01:11:05 PM »
These are pics from when I had my Hawken built. I didn't build it, a feller from up in Indiana built it. He started it with a chunk of curly maple. All the iron furniture is hand made including the lock plate but it has Chambers internals. The nose cap is Ted Cash. The double set triggers came off of an antique sporting rifle and man they are nice. The barrel was a Douglas NOS for a CVA Mountain rifle. He cut the breech with the drum off and installed a proper slanted snail breech bringing the length down to 31 inches. A little short for a Hawken but man does it shoot. It has a full buckhorn rear sight and a Hawken blade up front. It was built on blueprints from an original Hawken. He's not a professional builder but I think he did a fine job.

Barrel is inlet.

Doll head tang is inlet. Cheekpiece is roughed out.

Cheekpiece is shaped and buttplate is installed

Barrel keys are pinned.

Key heads are hand hammered.

Toe plate.

This is the pic of the finished rifle he sent.

This is in good light.

Man Hawg, that's a real beauty! I like the iron furniture. I've always thought it looked better than brass.

Real Hawkens didn't have brass furniture. He made all of it except the nose cap. The trigger guard, butt plate, ramrod thimbles, barrel keys are all hand made.

Back then he was building rifles that "looked" like period rifles but weren't copies of any particular rifle. He made a lot of scaled down rifles for kids. This is the first Hawken he built and the only one he built following blueprints. He made a few minor mistakes but nothing glaring. All in all it is a fantastic rifle. I lost track of him years ago so I don't know what he's doing now.

Yer darn skippy I still have it. It's a .54. I wish now I'd gone with a .58 but it's still a deer slayer with a PRB. At 50 yards it puts them all in one hole. Admittedly a really big hole but still one hole. (7+"
