I can't tell either. It might even be a Uberti. They made some brass 51's early on.

This revolver is not a brasser

Not until I know more about it. If it turns out valuable I will likely sell it. To gaudy for me. I have many 1851s that I shoot.

I have found out that the grip frame is gold plated.

Do owners of ornate guns like that one actually shoot them or is smokin em up considered gauche?

I've never been presented with the choice but have always wondered how that's handled.

The plating wont stand up to shooting, if it is plating. A lot of those gold colored guns are just a gold wash. It will wear off with excessive handling.

From what I've seen, most of the guys buying the "Faberge Egg" guns are doing so for the perceived collector value and potential appreciation in price. Honestly, I can think of better ways to accrue value than guns. Most of those typre do not shoot them. Pity.

From my personal experience when selling BP revolvers. I have gotten much better prices if they have not been fired.

Additionally I have many other 1851 Navy's I can shoot including an original.

Wow what a beauty.
Some serious work involved.
It deserves a nice display box and a life of leisure.
Just my opinion of course.
