Parrott Rifle Projectile
« on: February 10, 2022, 07:04:45 AM »
I work next door to this older gentleman who has a small collection of Civil War antiquities. He graciously allowed me to snap a few shots of this. I have not asked yet but I am thinking it was used in a 100 pounder Parrott Rifle. Really thought it was/is interesting and wanted to share.

That's really cool Tim.

Is it made of iron? If so, I did not realize that they used an iron projectile in anything. I wonder how that worked?

Dave, yes, as I understand it. It is fascinating. He has much more knowledge than me on these cannons. Sheesh!!

All artillery projectiles were iron. Conicals had a lead driving band. It looks like the rear end of a Parrott Shell.

A couple of other projectile pics of a smaller caliber? 10 or 20 pound Parrott rifle.

The top fragment is probably a Hotchkiss.
