Gunsmithing screwdrivers

I purchased a simple magnetic screwdriver set from my Mac Tools dealer a few years back. The replaceable bits are hollow-ground and hardened, and fit your typical Colt gun screws quite well. I think I spent maybe 20 bucks on the entire set, which is way cheaper than some of the so-called 'gunsmithing' screwdriver sets. You don't need to spend a fortune to be properly equipped, friends!

I have purchased a couple of sets of "gunsmith" screwdrivers and find that I have to grind widths and thickness on some of the bits as they do not fit the screws I need them for. I suppose to have the proper size bits, one would have to buy a gun-specific set of screwdrivers? That would get expensive fast!

Agreed. The only requirement for a gunsmithing screw bit is that the tip be hollow ground (not taper ground) and be thin enough to fit

Grace tools will custom make drivers for your guns or to match screws you send them. They will also just do the shanks so you can use your own handles if you want. I had three made for under $20 and they are great todeal with and made in the USA

I have a set of those Grace Screwdrivers. They are great. I only use these on my guns.
Oh, by the way...Kimmy was going tighten up some loose screws on one cabinet in the kitchen. I just happened to SEE that the screwdriver handle was wood. I grabbed that screwdriver out of her hand and looked at it. Sure enough, Kimmy had one of my Grace screwdrivers!!! Grrrrrrr!!!!!!
I got them hid now!!!

  I have a set made by Pachmayr, paid over $50 from a local gunshop, but I was in a hurry that day.  They're good but I still have to do a little honing to fit specific screws.  I think if you're clever with a grinding wheel, or dremel tool, and heat treating, you could make your own.

  Speaking of magnetic, the other thing I like are these little magnetic steel parts trays, often found in auto shops.

I could tell you about the time I dropped a Remmy hand screw on the rug in my shop, but this is a Colt forum.
I try to use a magnetic tray underneath now. Always.

LOL, yup, I keep a collection of magnetic trays and extension magnets and search lights for finding things in the rug.
