Whats a good BP sub that can be used in .45 Colt and in .38 Special as well in BP pistols?  :cowboypistol:

Tripple 7 is nice, I use it
But, you just wait for other guys to chime in with their prefered subs
You'll get confused, but on a higher level

In my .45 Colt (Open Top Uberti, proofed for smokeless) I use either 2F BP or Unique. I've shot a lot of Pyrodex in my day but never in a cartridge.

This is going to meet with some moans I'm sure. But I've used Pyrodex in my .45 Colt loads many times. It works just fine. I don't have any experience with any other sub.

Pyrodex in .36,.44,.38 special, 44-40 and others. I prefer Swiss but Pyrodex performs about the same.

Hello AZ6Gun,

I purchased a case of Black MZ from Sportsman's Warehouse while they were closing it out.
Though I have not shot it in a percussion arm as of yet, I use it in my Cartridge Conversions and am very happy with the results.
The nicest thing about it is the fact that you don't need any lubrication with it.
Black MZ was made by American Pioneer Powder and is the same as the APP Powder.
Now Grafs has Shooter's World Multi-Purpose Black which is also made by American Pioneer Powder.

Hi Dave, wouldn't you be better off using match-heads? lol

Richard

Just because you don't like Pyrodex doesn't mean everybody else doesn't like it. I'd wager more people that have tried it do like it than don't. :hurry:

Hi Hawg, maybe people can express their own views on Pryodex? Have you ever considered that my jabs at Pryodex are simply to get a rise out of you? Works every time. lol Everyone can do as they please when it comes to propellants. IMO Pryodex does have value where other subs are not available. I have many other sub options and choose to not use Pryodex. Too bad that Pryodex killed its inventor. Hawg, you know that I love you?  )l_ )l_

Richard

You may be right Richard! If I could get match heads!  (7+"

Like I said, I have zero experience with anything except real BP and Pyrodex. I always went with Pyrodex because it's readily available. Not a single store around here has real BP anymore, due to the excessive storage requirements. But they all seem to have Pyrodex on the shelves, and it's not expensive. I may yet try another sub one day. But for me, Pyrodex performs like FFFg and that's good enough for me.

But don't get me wrong, I still use real BP first and foremost. Pyrodex is just for backup.

Hi Hawg, my message board brother. You are my Jedi master when it comes to BP message board posts. I hope others appreciate you as much as I do.

Richard
