Found a Lyman 1858 at a lgs today
« on: November 19, 2022, 03:29:26 PM »
It appears to be in very nice condition with one exception. It has a dovetail blade front sight.
This looks to be a glue on sight with the dovetail above the barrel.
Any idea on the value.
Not sure of the maker?
Didn’t see ASM on it anywhere.
Considering going after it Monday

Most of the Lyman guns were Armi San Paolo (ASP) denoted by the DGG stamping on the lower barrel flat under the loading lever right near the threads. They used dovetail sights on many of them. They are nice guns, more accurate in size to the originals than the Pietta models. The majority of the Lyman guns have a high copper alloy in the frame which gives it a purple-ish hue. I have or have owned several of the Lyman guns and also other ASP Remmies and like them a lot.

I have a Lyman branded '58 Remington in .36 cal. made by Uberti in 1970   I consider it one of the best Remington models I have owned.

I’m fairly certain this front sight is a glue on deal.
Is it worth $220.00

AR. Howdy, it has been awhile. Good to see you. I don't know these guns like the others on this board but if it's in good condition and you like it? The price sounds reasonable to me. Would it be a shooter or just a wall hanger? Hope all is well with you and the wife. BTW Did you ever break ground on the gun and sewing building for you and the Miss's?

If you don't, Lemme know. the Lyman/Uberti I got from Smoky has been my favorite.

Will do but I’m not sure it’s a Uberti?
I’ll try to verify tomorrow.

Sorry for being so late on this Buddy.
We’re doing well.
We put the building off in favor of a couple different projects.
One being a new front porch.
I have that finished and now restoring a antique glider swing that was her grandfathers.
Who knows what’s after that.

AR. Projects. Sounds all to familiar. I’ve got my share. Did you ever find out if the 1858 is a Uberti?

You have it!!!! I was wondering who got that gun, I had forgotten who he sold it to! If you ever want to part with it, I'll be happy to take it and give it a good home. That gun and my Lyman "no warning" are the reason these boards were started in the first place all those years ago...

See if it doesn't have "black powder only" on it... Lyman let a few out that weren't stamped with that line and they are quite rare...

Lyman never imported ASM. They imported ASP and Uberti. Lyman quit importing revolvers in 1975. The black powder warning was added in the early 70's so it's not unusual to see a Lyman without it. I have seen it said the Remingtons were made by Uberti but I haven't confirmed it.
