That ring you see is the chamber throat.

Thank you Hawg. From that POV, is this side of the ring smaller in diameter?

The front of the cylinder should be the smaller.

Okay fellers. Roast time for Zulch. Shot the .44 spl yesterday using a birch casey target at 25 yards or 75 feet. Did not do too well. Hawg told me should have started closer so that I could see how it performs at closer range then gradually move further back as I learn the gun. I shot in standing position holding the gun with a two hand grip. Bottom line? I shot 35 rounds and hit the target maybe 8 times?? I think. It looks like some of the stickies fell off so there you have it :icon_scratch: The larger photo at the bottom shows the full area with a lot of holes?? Carpenter bees?  L@J Maybe.

On a side note. I shot the ammo that this thread has been about. I had no reportable issues with the ammo except my thumbs are sore from pushing those rounds in. I will stay away from this type and make of ammo in the future. Love to hear from you guys. I apologize that the pics looks somewhat distorted.

I have an 1872 Open Top , 44 Spl. purchased   three years ago.  It will accept loaded reloads with roll crimped case mouths but will not fully allow seating of new uncrimped Starline cases.   Without measuring the chambers in the cylinder I knew it was chambered too short.   Starline case lengths measured to specs.  My solution for this gun has been to use only 44 Colt cases.

The short chamber depths in my gun would not allow the fired cases to open up completely on firing.  I found this problem before ever firing the gun.  I never gave it a chance to see what happened using standard 44 Spl. ammo.

Thanks dangt 👍👍 do you still own that gun? I’m thinking of getting into reloading but not sure if I have the time but with the cost of manufactured ammo? Sheesh  :-[

I highly recommend it. Reloading will save about half the cost of a box of ammunition. Plus you can work up loads for optimum accuracy, which makes it worth the time and cost of equipment.

Hey Marshal. That sounds like a no brainer. Saving money being the most attractive part of it. Lol

By the way. When considering reloading, Is it best to use hard lead in open tops or soft lead like in BP guns?

If a gun is manufactured for modern ammunition, it is pretty much a matter of which is most accurate. Stay within whatever limits the manufacturer recommends. If it's a black powder pistol that's been converted, soft lead is probably better.

Thank you Marshal. The revolver was made in 2010 Uberti. Uberti’s instruction or whatever they’re called seem very generic in nature and do not address issues Like this. This gun was not a BP gun to the best of my knowledge. Cimarron is of no help either. I’m sure there must be some data out there somewhere on this . Just haven’t found it.
