Tight arbor fit
« on: February 16, 2023, 12:48:20 PM »
My barrel stops short of going on to the arbor about 1/8 of an inch. I can tap it on with a mallet or force it on with the wedge. I don't see any burrs in the hole or the arbor can i lap the two together some way?

Shootemup, is this a new gun or one you've had awhile? If you've had it awhile is there anything you've done differently that it won't seat? That's interesting

It will wear in. Don't use the wedge to force it on.

Zulch the gun was made in 1984 but I believe it was never fired or ever taken apart, a safe queen.

Thanks Hawg I didn't think using the wedge was a good idea figured that would be hard on the wedge slot. I do need to fix the short arbor and thought it would be easier if the barrel could be pushed onto the frame by hand.

I do believe you can use lapping compound on the arbor, index the barrel 90 degrees and just twist back & forth until it slides on all the way. I seem to recall doing that with one of mine.

I don't understand wanting to put the barrel on 90° in the first place?!! They pretty much won't go on any way other than correctly oriented.   If it's tight going on, that's ok !! Shoot it !!!  Taking material off just makes it more sloppy.
If it's not a Pietta of late, it has a short arbor,  no need to test.

Awww Cap!!! ( thanks)

I think I see now, he's just wanting to get the barrel assy back on ?
If holes are lined up with the locating pins,  just hold the barrel against the frame and smack the end of the barrel smartly on the floor!! ( preferably with a rug !!)

My shop floor is concrete and I have an area rug under me. It doesn't take much to get the barrel and frame to cooperate!!
That by the way is how us "perfessionals" do it!!

The pictured gun appears to be newer Uberti. Every new Uberti I've seen in the last few years seems to have a very tight arbor to barrel fit. I had a real time getting the barrels off a pair of new Uberti 2nd Model Dragoons.
Only Blackpowder is interesting.

Navy Six, I believe he said this of the gun.

The gun is an Uberti Dragoon  of 1984 manufacture so yes it does have a short arbor which is what I want to fix.

My plan was to do the 45 Dragoon fix, a number 14 SS sheet metal screw head in the arbor hole.

My concern is with the tight fit of the two parts, when sanding the screw head down and then dropping it in the arbor hole to check for fitment.

I believe 45 dragoon says to sand the head down till the barrel and frame meet then do your final arbor sanding to get your endshake.

But if I happen to sand the screw head down a little to far and then force the two assemblies together would I not already be too short.

Maybe I'm overthinking this.  I'll go back and reread the Shop Series thread again.

Thanks everyone

Sorry I missed the part of the 1984 manufacture. On the pair of Dragoons I mentioned I ended up polishing the arbor hole in the barrels. I also found a few burrs around the wedge slot in the arbors which I hit lightly with a file.
Only Blackpowder is interesting.
