Vinegaroon won't do anything to steel. The way vinegaroon works is the iron in it it chemically alters the tannins in the leather. Iron is what gives the vinegaroon the blackness. Vinegar is the carrier. Just like water can be the carrier for the iron. Some leathers aren't tanned in a way to leave any tannins in it and those leathers won't turn black. For example, if you want to turn chrome tanned leather black, you'd have to soak it in a strong brew of tea first to get tannins in it. Then after it's dry, the vinegaroon should do the trick.

Just watched a You Tube video from Road Agent Leather doing a vinegaroon holster. He just puts the steel wool in a jar with the vinegar and the caption says "the steel wool doesn't need to be cleaned or de-greased". He simply put the two together and waited a week until all the steel wool disolved and said its ready to go.
Only Blackpowder is interesting.

I'm all for simplification. Next time I need some, I'll give that a try.

Hmmm. That wasn't my experience. I got lazy and did it that way once. The leather turned gray, but not even close to black. Threw it away and did it the way Marshal told me to, by cleaning the steel wool first. No problem after that.

Well, hell. I guess I may have to re-assess my re-assessment. (7+"

During the video the guy added water to the week old solution and dunked the leather in stating that he didn't want dark black. The leather came out a grayish color but he later air brushed the border stamping with the original solution which darkened it to a nice two-tone effect.

That make sense. Because that's exactly what I ended up with. The leather turned a dark gray. I went ahead and made a holster with it. I can't remember of I sent that one with a gun I sold or not. If I still have it, I'll post a picture.

I have found that vinegaroon after a year or two will loose it's effectiveness and produce a grey instead of black. I always dip a scrap in the stuff to see if it has gone to the grey side before using it. If so, I toss it and make a new batch.
