The Ultimate Holster Design?
« on: June 24, 2023, 09:26:47 PM »
For me, nothing beats the lines of a good Slimjim holster. It's historically correct for the early cartridge era. Some I've made have one particular aspect or two I really like. I figured it was time to combine some of those ideas into one to see how it looks.

I like the upper lines and the stitched toe of my modified SC Gallup holster design.

Hickock's holster is quite graceful with its triple recurve and narrow toe.

The simple decorative work on many holsters of the type don't take your attention from the naturally attractive shape.

So I put all those aspects together and here's the result:

Is it the perfect holster? Of course not, there's no such thing. But the combined pattern is good and the narrowed, stitched toe is successful. The triple recurve opens up the holster throat. I feel combining those ideas resulted in a more graceful holster.

I couldn't agree more about Slim Jim holsters. Nice, neat and trim for a field holster. The one modification I usually like is to have the gun's trigger guard exposed. I like this for Cowboy Shooting, not for any type of "quick draw". Too often in the past during a Match I would reach for the gun and fumble things a bit because my fingers would hit that leather covering the trigger guard. Just me I guess and I'm sure others find no difficulty there. Thanks for posting those pictures Marshal, I never get tired of looking at beautiful leather. Oh... but if you are going to make a pair for me please make them open toed!! :cowboypistol:

Thanks, N6. Open toes are not uncommon in historically correct holsters. Plus, many toe plugs were removed so water and dirt would not collect in them. When I started making them for CAS purposes, I often made them for a stitched-in toe plug and just left the plug out.

Thanks, Mick. The patterns are almost as interesting to make as the holsters themselves. But the holsters are certainly more fun.

Nice work! I really like the looks of your final design, Slim Jim holsters are my favorites.

Thanks, Dave. Next I'm considering a Main & Winchester Design. There are a few examples in Packing Iron (pages 79 & 87) and I found another online. I'm still thinking about it.

A guy on another forum was asking questions about this style. A suspender holster. I think it would work great for a shorter barrel 32 or 38...... found something similar in Packing Iron. Just something quite different. It slips inside your trousers....on the far left you can see it's intended carry position
