Long hunter knife
« on: May 03, 2024, 11:05:20 AM »
My interpretation of a long hunter knife. I made it out of an old gang saw blade and it has some pitting but I like the look of it and it's sharp enough to cut paper thin tomato slices. The blade is 11 inches long and 1 3/4 wide. The handle is elk antler and it's a handful but it feels good in the hand. The bolster is poured pewter. Mike116 made the sheath and it's a perfect fit.

That is really nice Hawg! It looks authentic. I've seen handmade knives similar to that one going for hundreds of dollars.
My biggest concern is that when I pass away, my wife will sell my guns for what I told her I paid for them.

That's a real nice knife there Hawg. When did you make/construct that knife? I like the elk and pewter handle. Mikes sheath compliments the knife. Hand and glove fit👍👍

Thanks BC and Z. I made it years ago but it just had rough wood scales. I put the antler and pewter on it I guess about 8 or 9 years ago.

Not hunter knives for sure, but I just thought, why not add a couple. We had some nice items earlier, from Mazo Kid and Steam Burn et alt. but the pictures seem all to have disappeared.

I'll admit mine isn't "nice" but it's typical of what would have been carried in the 1760's.

Thanks Z. I just wanted something typical of what long hunters carried in the mid 18th century. To buy a knife and sheath that big is pretty expensive.

Thanks Cap. I may never use it for anything but it will look good hanging on the wall with my rifle and tomahawk. Now I need to find a flint pistol I can afford.

Hawg, The pewter is nice. Did you have to melt the pewter and make a mold or how/what did you do?

I wrapped brown paper around it and taped it down tight then poured the melted pewter in and filed it off smooth. It could use some more smoothing but if I haven't done it by now I probably won't. (7+"
