Umm...excuse me?!!!
« on: September 05, 2024, 12:12:58 PM »
Just got an email from Natchez touting a big sale on black powder subs. So I went there to browse and all the usual suspects were there; Pyrodex, Triple 7, pellets, etc. A few bucks off, nothing to write home about. Then my eyes caught the Blackhorn 109 powder. "Sale! $89.00!" Small print underneath says "size-8 oz"

Excuse me?!! That's $160.00 a pound! There better be gold dust mixed in there for that kind of money!

Now, I've heard good things about Blackhorn, but come on...

What’s the deal with 209? Never owned any; never shot any.  It seems that it’s for black powder long arms and reloading  suppositories.  Does anyone just pour it into cap & balls?  Anyway, at that price I’ll volunteer to use something else.

For 209 cleanup Hogdens recommends a couple of specific cleaners and “Using water or other muzzleloading solvents to clean your barrel is not recommended. No water? I wouldn’t know how to act.
They say to use  209
variety primers, too.  No mention of good ol’ #10’s.  That, on its own, may answer my question.

Well, here's my take on it, G...
I load my BP carts with either 2F or 3F (or in rare instances I'll load BP 45/70 with 1.5F). Either way, I don't need "extreme accuracy" on either a handgun or rifle. I reckon they are patterning this towards the ultra-long range Sharps and rolling block shooters, like Sagebrush Longshots...most who load with smokeless anyway;

...and coincidentally, appear to be pretty well-heeled, so I guess $160.00/lb wouldn't cause most of them any sleepless nights. Doctors and lawyers and such.
I load 63gr of 2F behind every 535gr Postell bullet. How long would it take me to roll through half a pound of Blackhorn 209 at that rate? (wait...I'll tell you: 56 rounds!) Yeah...no. I'll stick with my water-soluble Black. Heck, if I'm feeling cavalier I may even spring for some Swiss!
