Colt Official Police
« on: October 01, 2024, 10:12:14 AM »
Well, I finally bought my first Colt, a 1937 Official Police model. I researched for about 2.5 months and the right one finally came along. I initially was looking at S&W M&Ps and Colt New Service. Interesting to me are the grips on this gun. I recall reading that the grips for these were hard rubber up until the late 20's at which time they started offering in checkered walnut with a Colt medallion? I took the grips off to see if there was a serial number but I did not see one but there is something that appeared to have possibly been some sort of Ink looking artifact on one grip. If you look at something too long your mind may make something out of nothing, play tricks if you will, so I just let that go. The grips do appear to be old or at least they look that way to me. I had about 30 minutes yesterday to spare so I took it out and shot about 18 rounds with it. I shot it SA and then DA mode. The trigger pull seemed silky smooth to me. No, i didn't take any pictures but will the next outing when i can have more time. I shot at the corner of a large piece of plywood in the woods. No great grouping at approximately 20 yards but was able to account for every round. I then shot 6 rounds at a skinny dead tree (about 6" wide) at about 25 feet and saw debris flying from it. It was fun. Anyway, I would appreciate any comments and advice from anyone here. I'm sure you seasoned guys know this gun well.

Wow! That's a beauty, Z! Heavy trigger pull in DA? I'd say you struck gold there. Glad to hear it shot well also. Really nice pics as well. Ya done good.

Thank you Cap. I appreciate it. It's got some age on it of course but the bore is in pretty dog-gone good condition. The price was right and I was looking for a shooter. The trigger surprisingly, is not too heavy. I look forward to spending more time with it.

Nice Colt Zulch!
My biggest concern is that when I pass away, my wife will sell my guns for what I told her I paid for them.

That's a good shooter Zulch.    My Son-in-Law has one like that but with the old rubber grips.    His grandfather gave it to him,   I've fired it a couple times.   Like your's the trigger is fairly light even in DA.

Hey Mike. Thank you. What do you make of those grips? Any thoughts?

The grips look homemade to me.   They look OK but could use a refinish.   I would look for a set of Colt original grips.   They should be easy enough to find and I doubt if they would cost much.

Nice find, Zulch. I hope you get a chance to "exercise" it. I find it very satisfying when an older gun shoots well. Let us know how it does when you've put some rounds through it. Good Luck!

Good find. My father had one almost like it. His was marked as a 38 Police Special. It was much as you describe in feel. I wish I had it today.

Thanks Marshal. Colt Police Positive Special?? I am guessing you sold or gave it away?
Do you have any thoughts on the grips? Someone on another forum had this to say about the grips, "The grips are from a 1917 and didn't have a medallion.". The 1917 has a larger frame than the Colt OP IIRC? If so, could 1917 grips fit the Colt OP E frame??  Is it possible that the the 1908 Colt Army Special (prior to name change 1927) could have used non Colt medallion wooden grips?
